Tilton Recalls D-Day Special to the Ledger 95 year old James Tilton reflected back on D-Day which is known as the largest military invasion by sea. That invasion resulted in over 4,000 Americans being killed. Mr. Tilton noted that they prepared for months in the marshes and swamps of Southern England training for the invasion. On June Third, Tilton said they were on a boat heading to the target. He said they tried to distract themselves from think ing of what was ahead. The Navy dropped depth charges nearby and offi cers told them what the mission would be. Tilton’s battalion was to lead the assault on Oma ha Beach. Omaha Beach was later nicknamed “Bloody Beach”. Para troopers were spearhead ing the invasion. The long awaited in vasion was set to go and everyone was extremely quiet. Five of the six boats in Tilton’s compa ny never reach the beach, reducing the number of men from 193 to 36. Til ton was then the acting commander at the age of 20. He joined the mili tary at 15 by not giving his correct age. With the heavy shell ing coming at them, the death toll from the Battalion of Rangers and Tilton’s battalion was ex tremely high. He recalls the number of bodies on the beaches in France that he saw. Tilton stressed the sacrifice made by those serving in what became the foundations for the final outcome of World War II. Like many others, Tilton said his motivation to serve was based on the belief that doing so was what every responsible person did at the time. After serving 35 years in the military, Tilton came back to Albany. Tilton was injured three times. During that time, the soldiers were treated and sent back into battle and were not rotated out. Mr. Tilton noted that people do appreciate the historical significance of D-Day.
