The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, October 9,2019, Page 9A Kiwanis Club Installs New Officers and Board Members Special to the Ledger By David Shivers The Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County recently installed its offi cers and board members for the 2019-2020 year, which started October 1. Kathy Megahee of Thomasville, Lieutenant Governor for Division 5 of the Kiwanis District of Georgia, conducted the installation ceremo nies. In addition to the offi cers and board member installations, a number of special recognitions were presented. Mel Almond, liaison to the club-sponsored South west Georgia Home School Association Key Club, and Jo Ann Wright, club treasurer for the past four years who is stepping down from her post, were presented plaques honoring their service commitments. David Shivers received a plaque for his service as club president during the 2018-19 club year. (Kiwanis club years run from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.) A very special presen tation was made to Fa ther Jim Bullion, board member and past club president. He was rec ognized with the George F. Hixson Award, which is given by Kiwanis In ternational to Kiwanians who have demonstrated a strong commitment to service in their clubs and communities. The club made a $1,000 donation to the Kiwanis Interna tional Foundation in Bul lion’s name. Bullion is an Episcopal priest who has served in permanent and interim capacities at all three Episcopal parishes in Albany, including many years as rector at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, as well as numerous other Photo by Norris Wootton Melissa “Mel” Almond was honored for her enthusiasm and service as Key Club liaison. According to club president Shivers, “Fa ther Jim’s dedication to Kiwanis was especially evident this past year, as he continued to serve in spite of an ongoing medical condition that required hospitalizations and doctor appoint ments, and from which he is still recovering. He has truly been an inspi ration to his fellow club members.” Last year’s club offi cers and board members received memento gifts of Kiwanis key chains Where’s the Authoritative Proof? Once again I must respond to last week’s article by Kate Scar- malis. She stated that she still stood by her position that the Catho lic Church at some time in its history actually CONDONED abortion, yet she could not provide one quote from Catho lic authority (a pope or Council) that actually supports her contention. Instead, she relied on a long article by Judge John Noonan who had written many articles concerning “ethical issues and the Catho lic Church under the aegis of Notre Dame’s Law School.” She even provided a link to the referenced article that, unfortunately, I was unable to access on my computer. Apparently, this ONE article is over 100 pages long, so I would assume it must contain ample amounts of papal and Catholic Council statements to support this contention, yet Ms. Scarmalis didn’t even provide one quoted PARAGRAPH from this detailed work. In her first column on the subject, the only evidence Ms. Scarmalis provided as proof that the Catholic Church condoned abortion was soundly refuted by my response. But her original statement which started the controversy itself was quite tell ing to me. She wrote, “Religious views varied some, but EVEN (em phasis mine) the Catho lic church condoned the practice of abortion as it stood at the time.” The only religious view she covered was the Cath olic Church’s. Given the word “even” in the above sentence shows that everyone knows that it is the Catholic Church that holds the highest moral ground on this issue. And if it could be shown that Catholic beliefs on this matter actually changed (even as late as 1869!), it would help Protestants rest a bit easier, since Protestant religions hold lower moral standards. The bottom line is that, since the statement was made by Ms. Scarmalis, the burden of proof lies with her. And refer encing one article by a person that she sees as an expert on Catholic ethics; an article that is over 100 pages long, and without citing even ONE authoritative quote, just doesn’t cut it with me.
