Page 2B, The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, November 6,2019 Lee County XC Trojans compete in State Championship temperature dropped no ticeably. All season the runners pleaded for the day when is the heat go ing to let up. Weeks after we thought the weather would have cooperated the temperatures finally dropped. Actually, prior to the cold front moving in the temperature was a muggy 85 degrees. An hour later it was around 55 degrees, a stark dif ference. Arriving in Carrollton the temperature was in the low 40s with a substantial wind. Armed with gloves and many layers to warm up in the boys team took the line. 212 runners toed the line that crisp fall morning. The course is spectator friendly and it almost feels like the runners are orbiting around the fans. Sully Shelton of Harrison High School was the first runner to cross the line in a time of 16:11. He helped lead Harrison High School to win 1st in the team competition in a close point battle with Pope High School finishing 2nd by 4 points. Lee County maintained their strong pack formation and maintained a com petitive spread between runners 1-5. It poured and poured as we all sat in our cars waiting for the lightning to subside. When there was a small break in the weather we bolted from our cars, splashing through the fields complete ly saturated with rain, and gathered in the portable lock er room for the final instructions on race day logistics. While we were having our meeting the filled with hard work, learning to push the boundaries of physical and mental strength, and practice executing racing technique. The one resounding lesson that every runner must learn is to expect and anticipate the unexpected. Jaron Willis would also record two sacks. Josh Roberts and Jere miah Robinson would have 1 sack each. The defense would play much better this week and hopefully will continue that improve ment in this week’s Region Championship. Kyle Toole would finish the night 15 for 24 with 143 yards passing. Preston Simmons would finish the night 6 rush es for 11 yards. Caleb McDowell would have 5 rushes for 38 yards, and Toole had 7 rushes for 33 yards. The offense will be tested again this week. The Coffee defense has been stingy so far this year. However I would put my money on Kyle and the boys to right the ship to give Lee its third straight region champi onship. This Friday is not only for the region Title, but it will be Senior night, so get there a little early and help us honor all the Trojan seniors. Kickoff is set for 7:30 and let’s not forget there is no love lost between these two programs. Lee defeated the Trojans just two years ago for its first State Football Title. So I hope to see every one at Trojan Field this Friday night and support your Trojans. Lee has a reputation for having the best fans in 6-A football, and we will need every one this Friday. So, as always, Go Trojans.
