Read to Me Special to the Ledger Over the years, count less studies have been performed to determine what makes some stu dents more academically successful than others. While a wide range of factors have been identified, one strategy was found to have the greatest positive ef fect on later academic success— early exposure to books and reading. Reading for as little as 20 minutes per day exposes children to 1.8 million words per year, and students who are exposed to more words will score 90% better on standardized tests than their peers. In addition, exposure to literature can foster a love of reading, which promotes lifelong learning. For these reasons, the Lee County High School 9th Grade Campus began the “Read to Me” initiative so that children can continue to be read to even after the school day ends. In an effort to exhibit the importance of reading to children,“Read to Me” showcases students, teachers, coaches and community members reading books via video. Guest readers can read a book of their choice and be videotaped. The recording is then posted to the “Read to Me” but ton on the Lee County School System website (lee.kl2.ga.us) under the Trojan Spotlight link. After clicking on this link, children can select the story they want read to them. They are able to see the words and pic tures as the guest reader brings the story to life. This provides children with the opportunity to enjoy the inflection and pronunciation of a prac ticed reader, as well as the colorful illustrations of the book. Books will be added regularly to the site and children all over the world can log in to hear their favorite story being read. This site is perfect for busy parents since they can have a book read to their children in the car, in waiting rooms, at home...any where! This is a new initia tive for LCHS Ninth Grade Campus and we do need some help. We need readers! If you or someone within your Home • Auto • Life • Bank organization would like to be a guest reader, we would love to hear from you. Simply contact the school at 903-3590 and ask to speak to the media specialists about coming to read. You can bring a favorite book, or we have some you can select from. We hope that the “Read to Me” link will become a valuable part of your child’s reading life. Melt's N al Rnnltaj yi.l II—I LJuJXxJ U A4 SRIIT 29 gauge Galvalume $1.45 ItT Thru the end of the year!
