The Led County Ledger Hometown Source Of Local News Hometown Newspaper of William and Tracy Hood Volume XLII- Number 11 Leesburg, Georgia - - November 27, 2019 Fifty Cents Breeden, Revell Leesburg Mayor Candidates Billy Breeden and Michael Revell qualified last week as candidates for the special March 24 election to fill the Leesburg mayor’s seat vacated by Jim Quinn. Quinn resigned as mayor to run for the Georgia House District 152 seat recently vacated by Ed Rynders due to health related issues. Breeden is retired and serves on the Leesburg City Councilman. Revell is a Lee County busi nessman. Quinn resigned as mayor, as state law re quires, to seek the House 152 office after Rynders resigned with a year left on his current term. Quinn was the leading vote-getter in the special called nonpartisan elec tion on Nov. 5. Lormer Sylvester Mayor Bill Yearta finished second in that race out of four candidiates They will be on the ballot for a Dec. 3 runoff election. Santa Coming To Smithville Submitted Photo Joy and Billy Breeden Breeden Qualifies For Leesburg Mayor Billy Breeden, a life long resident of Lees burg, has qualified to run for the position of Mayor of Leesburg. Billy has served on the Leesburg City Council for 7 Vi years, serving as Mayor Pro Tern for two years. Billy hopes to continue working for the citizens of Leesburg and see the improvement of several important areas - down town development, recre ational development, and improvements in water and sewer projects. Billy worked for Llint Equipment Company as General Parts Manager for 38 years, retiring in 2007. He is an active member of Pirst Baptist Church Leesburg, having served as a deacon and a member of an adult men’s Sunday school class. Billy has been mar ried to Joy for 50 years and they have two sons - Hugh and his wife Kim, and Matt and his wife Heidi. They have 4 grandchildren. Santa is coming to Smithville at the Com munity Building on Saturday, December 14th. He will be at the Smithville Community Building from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Each chid 12 and under will receive a gift bag of goodies. Lunch will be served and all in attendance are welcome to have lunch. A contest will be held and the first place win ners will receive a bicy cles. Participants must be 12 and under. There are three ways to win. The first way to win is to read books at the Smithville Library now through December 13. There is a reading tracker at the library with instructions. The second way to win is to write a one paragraph essay on one of the fol lowing topics: (a) I love my parents because, (b) I love Christmas because and (c) I love Smithville because and the third way to win is to partici pate in the dance com petition at the Christmas party on December 14th. For children ages one to three, there will be a col oring contest. All entries will be placed in a box and two winners drawn to receive a tricycle. A raffle will be held and the winner will receive an adult bike. The public is urged to attend and celebrate and remember: Jesus is the reason for the season! This year Central Monitoring is teaming up with A Place 4 Hope to collect new and gently used coats to distribute - free of charge - to local children and adults. The Albany “One Warm Coat” project is being held in collaboration with a national endeavor with the same name. Coats of all sizes are welcome; children’s siz es are most needed. “The program is an easy way for all of us to pass along coats and jackets that we no longer need,” said Central Monitoring Owner/Pres ident Judy Randle. “Our donations of something so simple and so es sential may very well turn out to be the best holiday gift received by many people in our community.” With the help of the Albany Fire Depart ment, Central Monitor ing is making donating a coat simple: Coats may be taken to any Albany fire station or to Central Monitoring’s headquarters at 522 Pine Ave. From there, Central Monitoring will collect the coats and give them to A Place 4 Hope, which will distribute them locally. While this important community project will continue through the holiday season, the sooner the coats are donated, the sooner they will be provided to fam ilies that need them. Revell Seeks Leesburg Mayor’s Office Michael Revell quali fied last week for mayor of Leesburg to fill the unexpired term of Jim Quinn. Jim Quinn re signed as mayor to seek State House Seat 152 which Ed Rynders held for 17 years. Michael Revell has been an active member of both the Albany and Leesburg communities for many years. Born and raised in Albany, he re located to Leesburg two years ago with his wife and three children. For Michael, the move was not only a new place to call home but a commitment to make a long-term investment in Leesburg and Lee County. Michael has always aspired to run for office and help make his community a thriving place to not only live, but attract new and existing businesses to also call home. He feels the city of Leesburg has great po tential for growth and is ready to take its econom ic development to the next level with the right leadership. Revitalizing Leesburg will come with change, and with change comes progress and growth. That change starts with leadership within the city council. Michael is a successful business owner of Roof Services, a full-service roofing company that services South Geor gia. He is a graduate of Leadership Lee, served on the Young Leaders Society board, and is currently an active member of the Home Builders Association of Southwest Georgia.
