Page 8A, The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, December 11,2019 Sumter EMC Plans for the Future Special to the Ledger As Sumter EMC Pres ident/CEO, Ted Mc Millan, announces his plans to retire in 2020, the Sumter EMC Board of Directors has named Rene Smith, Senior Vice President of Operations, the incoming President/ CEO effective January 6, 2020. McMillan feels confident this will be a smooth transition for the cooperative as he will work alongside Smith during the com ing months, providing support and feedback from insights gained through his 35-year tenure as President/CEO. McMillan’s business skills make him a plan ner by nature which is displayed by his desire to plan for the future of Sumter EMC even into the days of his retire ment. McMillan says, “I know firsthand from working with Rene for over 31 years that Sumter EMC’s members will be served well with his leadership skills and knowledge guiding the cooperative. The Board of Directors feels confi dent Rene has the talent and knowledge needed for the position as he has already exhibited this in his previous roles at Sumter EMC.” Smith grew up on a family farm in Dooly County and obtained his B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology (with Power Generation and Distribution Option) from the Southern Poly technic College of Engi neering and Engineering Technology in 1988. He subsequently earned a Master of Business Administration from Auburn University and is licensed in the state of Georgia as a Registered Professional Engineer. As a dedicated em ployee of Sumter EMC for over 31 years, Smith has served the coopera tive in many capacities. Some of his experience includes the designing and construction of the utility distribution sys tem, reviewing and an alyzing the distribution line design standards to maximize reliability and minimize costs, and serving on statewide committees represent ing Georgia’s electric cooperatives in matters related to the joint use of EMC poles. Smith’s most recent position has found him in a more ad ministrative role provid ing oversight, guidance, and support across the cooperative. Ten Permits Issued For New Homes In November During the month of November 2019, the Lee County Building Permit Office issued ten permits for single family dwell ings. The ten permits were issued in the unin corporated area of Lee County. The estimated con struction cost of the ten homes in the unincorpo rated area of Lee County was $1,210,155.00. During November, three permits were is sued for mobile homes in the unincorporated area of Lee County. The esti mated cost of the mobile homes was $184,100.00. During November in the unincorporated area of Lee County, four permits were issued for accessory buildings, six permits for pols & signs, seven residential addi tion & alteration, two garage/carport residen tial, 34 electrical, 18 plumbing, 21 heating & air and six gas. In Leesburg, two pool and signs permits were issued and one residen tial addition and alter ation. Nine electrical and one heating & air permits were issued in Leesburg. In Smithville, one elec trical permit was issued during November 2019.
