Georgia Girls State is a National pro gram of the American Legion Auxiliary and is a course of instruction in, as well as, a prac tical application of the fundamental principles and procedures of city, county, and state gov ernments. A session is conducted by each state. Under the guidance of skilled counselors and staff members, these young ladies will learn and practice through self-government, the du ties, responsibilities and privileges of American citizenships. These young ladies will be assigned to one of several cities and counties to form the mythical state of Geor gia Girls State. Using the know-how gained from these classes, these new citizens will organize and operate their newly formed city, county and state govern ment. Each citizen may choose to run for office and elect county offi cials. Each girl will be assigned to a party (Na tionalist or Federalist) and either to the Girls State House or Senate. They may also run and be elected as Governor or other state official. Each girl is encouraged to write a bill for debate in the Girls State House and Senate, if she wants to. An inauguration and graduation ceremony will be held at the con clusion of the week and two outstanding citizens will be selected by dele gates and staff to attend Girls Nation as Georgia Girls State Senators. Girls Nation will be held at the William Bolger Center, Potomac, MD, July 20-27, 2024. All expenses will be paid by Girls State.
