Soul Food
from the Hood
by Keith Hood
Who’s to blame for your
sin? Sin. What ever hap
pened to sin? We live in
an age where it’s standard
for politicians to lie to us
on a daily basis or a con
venient basis, whichever
is most expedient to their
agenda. If we point out
the inconsistencies with
the actual truth we are
branded as simple and not
understanding the nuanc
es. What does “ear mark”
mean? What is “is”?
They are still saying one
thing and doing anoth
er. Some speak in half
truths to lead us away
from their true intentions.
Only telling half the truth
serves the same intention
as a lie. It’s meant to
deceive.
I’m sure none of us
ever act like that. OK.
That’s not even a !4 truth.
Although it’s politically
correct, it’s a complete
lie. Now I’ve confessed.
“If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and just
to forgive our sins and
to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.” (1 John
1:9)
How about you? When’s
the last time you didn’t
tell the whole truth about
a situation? You didn’t
tell the whole truth
because you meant to
completely deceive. May
be we should be honest
with ourselves about our
intentions. No, we must
be honest with ourselves
about our intentions.
Otherwise we deceive
ourselves and the truth is
not in us.
Oh yeah, I was talking
about sin and whatever
happened to it. It has
been with us all along;
we just lie about its
reality. “If we say that
we have no sin, we are
deceiving ourselves and
the truth is not in us.”
This is the verse that
comes right before the
one about confessing our
sin. Whether it’s a sin
of commission such as
lying or stealing, or a sin
of omission (something
I should have done but
didn’t), we are all sinners.
“For all have sinned and
fall short of the glory of
God.”(Romans 3:23)
Since this is true,
we all have a problem:
“For the wages of sin is
death”(Romans 6:23a).
Death is to be separated
from God. We are stuck
with that debt. Unless. ..
we can find someone else
to take the blame. Here
is the crux of Christian
ity: Jesus took the blame
for our sin on the cross.
“Surely our griefs He
Himself bore, and our
sorrows He carried; yet
we ourselves esteemed
Him stricken, smitten of
God, and afflicted. But
He was pierced through
for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our
iniquities; the chastening
for our well-being fell
upon Him, and by His
stripes we are healed.
All of us like sheep have
gone astray, each of us
has turned to his own
way; but the Lord has
caused the iniquity of us
all to fall on Him.”(Isaiah
53:4-6)
How could Jesus take
the blame for our sins?
The blood sacrifice had to
be spotless, without sin.
“Because He had done no
violence, nor was there
any deceit in His mouth.
But the Lord was pleased
to crush Him, putting
Him to grief; if He would
render Himself as a guilt
offering. . . My Servant
will justify the many,
as He will bear their
iniquities. . . Because He
poured out Himself to
death, and was numbered
with the transgressors;
yet He Himself bore the
sin of many, and inter
ceded for the transgres-
sors.”(Isaiah 53:9b, 10a,
lib, 12b)
Confess your sin debt
and ask Jesus to pay it.
He won’t forgive if you
don’t ask. If you don’t
ask, you’ve only yourself
to blame.
