Page 6B, The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, January 31,2024 Swim Team Hosts Lee County Invitational Special to the Ledger by Jen Perkins The Lee County High School Swim team hosted the Lee County Invitational at the West Campus of Albany State University on January 6, 2024. The athlete waiting area was packed with over a dozen teams from Southern Georgia wait ing for their opportunity to compete for the first time in the new year. Prior to the beginning of the meet, Lee Coun ty’s Head Swim Coach Submitted Photo Lee County Middle School -East December Teacher of the Month - Lindsey Langston Elizabeth Hatcher rec ognized the graduating seniors in front of their home audience. “Erin Meyer is the daughter of Zeb and Les lie Meyer. Erin has been swimming with the Lee County swim program for 7 years. Her favorite swim team memory is definitely not what most would consider a favorite memory. Her favorite memory is from a meet in Thomasville where Erin ran into the wall of Submitted Photo Lee County Middle School-East December Staff Member of the Month - Sheryl Capers the pool and got a con cussion while doing the backstroke. This is her favorite memory because she can look back on it and laugh. Erin plans to attend Troy University and major in nursing. She hopes to one day become a Trauma Surgeon. “Alison Milsapps is the daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Mil sapps. Alison has been swimming with the Lee County swim program for 5 years. Her favorite memory from her time on the swim team is thinking about going to her first swim meet with the team. Alison will attend a 4-year univer sity and plans to major in computer science and business. Additionally, she is a member of the Beta Club, Art Club, and FCA. She and her twin sister even started an art club for the students with special needs at Lee County High. It is called the Mona Lisa Smile Club. “Josh Strickland is the son of Jennifer Strick land. Josh began swim ming with the Darton AquaDarts when he was five years old. He has swam competitively ever since, including seven years for Lee County. His favorite swim memory is being told during his sophomore year when he was anxious about swimming the 500 free to “have a heart-to-heart with yourself”. He still does that to this day before every swim meet. Josh plans to attend Kennesaw State Univer sity in the fall where he will pursue a degree in nursing. “Olivia is the daughter of Joey and Kelly Yawn. She has been swimming with the Lee County swim program for 7 years. She has been a member of the girl’s state qualifying relay team for the past two seasons. Olivia leads her team as a team captain this season. Olivia is also a member of the Blue Tide Swim Team. One of her favorite swim memories is when her relay team qualified for state last year here at their home pool. She plans on attending the University of Georgia and majoring in Adver tisement. She is also the DECA Vice President of Leadership and is a member of the National Honors Society, Beta Club, and National Tech nical Honors Society. “Eva Wessels is the daughter of Kurt and Erica Wessels. Eva has been swimming for Lee County since 7th grade when she moved to Georgia and also swims with the Blue Tide Club Team. During the 22-23 swim season, Eva served as co-captain and this season she does an excellent job leading the Lee County Trojan Swim Team as their captain. For the past two seasons, she has been a member of the state qualifying state relay team. They are headed back to the State Championship in February! Outside of swimming and academ ics, Eva is very active with FFA. Her achieve ments run from local to State and National involvement. She’s also active in DECA, Beta Club, and National Honor Society. Eva is a mem ber of First Methodist of Albany. She has been accepted to UGA and plans to major in Applied Biotechnology and looks forward to working in the animal pharmaceutical industry.” The Lee County Swim team will miss these seniors for all they con tribute to the team, but it will be exciting to watch them all positively add to our community in their own way. The Lee County Invi tational was a busy and competitive meet. Each event and heat brought a wonderful amount of competition and show cased swimmers doing what they love. Every detail was attended by our vol unteers, from timing the events and setting up a hospitality room to feed all the coaches, officials, and volunteers through out the day, many people helped with collecting money for entrance fees and programs, and the list goes on and on. Virtual Piglet 5K (3.1 miles) results: Danny Wall finished 1st in 43:34 in the Male, 80-Over age group. Brenda Gail Wall finished first in 66:09 in the Female 70-74 years age group. Virtual Hogpen 17K (10.625 miles) results: Brenda Gail Wall fin ished first in 3:44:37 in the Female, 70-74 years age group. Sophia Mattos of Albany Awarded Degree from UA Special to the Ledger Sophia Mattos of Al bany, GA, has received the following degree from The University of Alabama: Bachelor of Arts.
