The Lee County Ledger Wednesday, January 31,2024 - Page IB Lee County Swimmers Compete In Region Championship Special to the Ledger By Jen Perkins The Region Champi onship for Swimming was held on Thursday, January 18, 2024 in Warner Robins. Six high school teams bat tled for the title of Re gion Champion. They were: Houston County, Lee County, Northside Warner Robins, Thom as County Central, Tift County, and Veterans High School. In the Women’s High School competition, Tift County High School earned top honors, with Houston County fin ishing in 2nd, and Lee County earning 3rd. In the Men’s High School competition, Tift County also finished in 1st place, followed by Veteran’s High School, and Thomas County Central High School. Lee County finished 4th overall. Lee County’s relay teams swam strong in the Region Meet. The Women’s 200-Yard Medley Relay won 3rd overall. Team mem bers: Noelia Bermudez, Landry Liston, Olivia Yawn, and Eva Wes- sels. The same group of swimmers placed 2nd in the Women’s 200- Yard Freestyle Relay. The Women’s 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team earned their qualify ing time earlier in the season for the GHSA Swimming State Cham pionship in February, and Fee County is excited to cheer them on for their 2nd trip to the State Meet. Junior, Fandry Fiston will return to the State Championships to com pete individually in the 50-Yard Freestyle and the 100-Yard Breast stroke. Fandry was also honored for her hard work and dedication to swimming by being named Female Region Swimmer of the Year! The top ten individ ual finishers for the Region Championship were as follows: No elia Bermudez - (4th, 200-Yard Freestyle, 4th, 500-Yard Freestyle), Sean Hoover - (5th, 200-Yard IM, 2nd, 100-Yard Breaststroke), Tanner Rojek - (3rd, 50-Yard Freestyle, 3rd, 100-Yard Freestyle), Landry Liston - (1st, 50-Yard Freestyle, 1st, 100-Yard Breaststroke), Eva Wessels - (6th, 50-Yard Freestyle, 5th, 100-Yard Backstroke), Josh Strickland - (8th, 100-Yard Butterfly, 7th, 100-Yard Backstroke), Olivia Yawn - (7th, 100-Yard Butterfly, 7th, 100-Yard Backstroke), Gavin Morey - (8th, 100-Yard Freestyle), Tamara Jackson - (9th, 100-Yard Freestyle). Those advancing on to the State Championship will continue to prac tice and hone their skills for Atlanta, those whose season has come to a close have the opportunity to plan and begin training for next season.
