Page 2A, The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, May 29,2024 Republican To Vote In Congressional Run-Off Lee County Retired Educators had their annual convention in Athens, Georgia on May 7-9. Lee County walked away with many awards for all the work they do for Lee County students. Those members in attendance were Suzanne Mears, club president, Linda Cannon, Penny Knight, and Joy Butler. Also pictured is Jane Butler, leader of Area District 2. The Retired Educators are very proud of all of the work they do for all of the schools and students in Lee County. The club would personally like to thank Suzanne Mears, club president, for all the hard work she put into making the last several years so successful. Because of Covid, she has served the club as president for the last three years. Lee County Republi can voters will return to the polls June 18th to elect a candidate to face Sanford Bishop in the November General Elec tion. Voters will decide between Wayne Johnson and Chuck Hand. In the primary election, Wayne Johnson received 13, 879 votes (43.96%) and Chuck Hand received 10,095 votes (31.97%). Lee Countians can vote absentee by mail until June 7th. Advanced in person voting will be held June 10 until June 14 with election day on June 18th. Sheriff Reggie Rachals will begin his fifth term in January after win ning reelection. Sheriff Rachals received 2,204 votes (67.48%) to Dean Gore’s 1,062 votes (32.52%). Wendy David will begin her first full term as Lee County’s tax commissioner after being elected without opposition in the prima ry election. Lamar St. 229.924.9110 During the Smithville City Council meeting Monday, May 20th, the council discussed the grant that the city will received for im provements to the water system. Mayor Cutts explained that the LY 2021 Water Improve ment grant was reduced to $534,876.46. It was awarded to Zane Grace Construction to replace existing water main sys tem. Additional fire hy drants and cut-off valves will be added through out the city. Currently when it is necessary to repair a water line with out the cut-off valves the entire area had water service interrupted. Police Chief Sammy Stone gave an update on the neighborhood watch program for the city. Chief Stone noted that with an effective neighborhood watch pro gram, the crime rate is drastically reduced. He reminded citizens of the slogan - see something say something. opposition. Coroner Hill Mackey will serve a four year term after winning the primary election without opposition. On the non-partisan ballot, several local candidates were reelect ed without opposition including Probate Judge Melanie Gahring Rathel, Magistrate Judge Jim Thurman, District 2 board of education member Claire Lang and District 4 board of education member Jamie McDowell. Lran Walls, District 5 board of education member, was reelected after receiving 696 votes (72.80%) to Mary Egler’s 260 votes (27.20%). On the Republican ballot for the non-bind ing question concerning senior citizens over 65 to be exempted from paying school taxes, 2735 (85.63) voted yes while only 459 (14.37%) voted no. On that same question concerning senior exemption on the Democrat ballot, 664 (83%) voted yes while 136 (17%) voted no. Cannon is also the final recipient of the Star Rider Certificate of Appreciation. Cannon has been a wonderful part of the 18-78 family, always well behaved and friendly to others. The Star Rider Club was started in 2013 in an effort to reward and encourage great bus be havior. It proved to be a game changer.
