The purpose of the Special Elec tion will be to fill a vacancy for the Leesburg City Council Post 2. The polling location will be opened from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on the date fixed for the election. In the event a runoff election is needed, it will be held on December 3, 2024. The last day to register and be eligible to vote in this election will be Octo ber 7, 2024, through 5:00 p.m. This will also be the last day to make any address changes prior to the election. Absentee voting will be available. Johnson Director of Elections & Registration During the county commission meeting May 28th, the commis sioners after discussing potential changes to the zoning ordinance in regards to accessory buildings tabled the pro posed zoning ordinance Chapter 70, Article III, Section 70-84 changes. The discussion cen tered on accessory building allowance for lots of five acres or more. Planning Com mission recommended that the maximum number of accessory buildings be five for lots 43,561 square fret to five acres, seven maximum number of accessory buildings for lots five acres to 25 acres, and seven maximum number of accessory buildings for lots 25 acres or more. The staff’s proposal was to limit 25 or more acres to five accessory buildings which is the current regulation. Georgia Department of Transportation will fund the cost of a round-a bout at Haley Street/Ce dric Street. The county will pay the cost of the lighting at that area. The commissioners discussed the Local Road Assistance (LR.A) 2024 application and potential road projects. The state has additional $250 million in L.R.A. funds. The commis sioners agreed to submit three roads for this funding including New York Road and Hickory Grove Road. Several Lee County employees were recog nized by the board of commissioners during their meeting May 27 for their years of service to Lee County. Two employees, Adron Ben nett, a firefighter/EMT and Lieutenant Dudley Guerrero, a firefighter/ EMT were recognized for five years of ser vice. Lieutenant Marcia Brooks, a detention officer was recognized for 15 years of service and Jason Scott, a property appraiser, was recognized for 25 years of service. The commissioners reappointed three mem bers, Tim Davis, Bobby Donley and A1 Manry to the Development Au thority for a term of four years Joey Kirksey was appointed to replace Phil Franklin, who did not seek reappointment. Bobby Yandell was reappointed to the Tax Assessors Board for a three year term. The commissioners renewed the the annual NPDES permit contract and on call contract with Flint River Consulting. County Attorney Jimmy Skipper will draft an ordinance for filming in Lee County. Once the commissioners approve a filing ordi nance, it will provide guidelines, including application process, and permits for filming projects. Lee County is currently considered a Georgia Camera Ready community. Camera Ready is a website that helps filmmakers find different locations for their projects. The coun ty staff has previously received requests to film within the County. In Leesburg, three permits were issued for single family dwelling. The estimated construc tion cost of the three homes was $236,725.00. One electrical permit and one heating and air permits were issued in Leesburg during May. Two heating and air permits were issued in Smithville during May. During May, Lee County issued 47 business licenses. In January, 346 business licenses were issued. In February 192, 346 business licenses were issued. In March, 69 business licenses were issued. In April, 44 business licenses were issued. During the first five months of 2024, 698 business licenses have been issued.
