DIRECTOR Or THE MINTS CHARGED
V/ITH INCORRECT ESTIMATES.
tbt* -.itput of Silver and l*n
ilcrvaluiu; That < i Gold -Contrary to
Mr. Preston’s Statement, There Is Great
Demand For Silver.
The director of the mints has estab
lished a reputation for undervaluing
the gold output of Americtm mines aud
overvaluing the output of silver from
the same source. In dealing with the
latter meta! lie always quotes coinage
value, forgetting that the government’s
ft. 29 per ounce no longer interests the
miner or smelter, because it is not the
measure cf the silver product. The
latter i3 fixed by a coterie of London
brokers, who last year supplied Great
Britain with 3,800,456 ounces of stand
ard silver, the coinage y value of which
was £l,O-15,125. It cost the British gov
ernment £479,086, so that a handsome
seigniorage was realized in supplying
the wants cf the people at home and in
the colonies, We refer to this British
coinage of silver to correct an error in
Mr. Preston’s interview of a recent
date, iu which ho declared that there
was “no demand for silver anywhere,
not even for subsidiary coinage. ’’
The annual report of the deputy mus
ter of the British government corrects
this impression, it shows the purchases
of bar silver we have noted herein and
also the coinage of 25,970,839 pieces on
British account, 2,160,000 pieces for
use in Canada, 10,759,000 for lion::
koug. 815,000 for N wfouudlaiid and
3,935,540 pieces for the Straits Settle
ments. There is a large difference be
tween this total of 49,021,433 pieces cf
subsidiary coin aud ’‘uodemuud at all,"
and it represents iu a measure tlie
amount of accuracy which the director
of the mints—in his efforts to please the
gold element —brings to the service of
his estimates.
With the above in view we can safely
return to the gold output of ISO 7, as
guessed at by Director Preston. In
round numbers ho allows for an in
crease of §7,000,000 in the United
States over his own totals for 1890,
which were approximately as follows:
Alaska $2,055,000
Arizona. 2,00-I,At
California 18,285,90s
Colorado 11,911,0(11)
Idaho 2,155,800
Montana 4 .::•■), 1:1
Nevada 2,468,800
Oregon 1,451,C0G
Louth Dakota 4,009,10!]
Utah l,B3!’,!'!Xj
Other states and territories bring the
total forward to $03,088,000. In this \
table for 1593 Colorado is short at least
11 ,500,000, while California bewails
an arbitrary reduction of nearly $2,000,-
000, the mint statistician at San Fran
oisco, with 25 years of experience,
ing one of the complainants.
But if, as the director states, out
probable gold increase for 1897 is only
f7,000,000, bow does the chief officer
of themiut propose to anuortiou it? Ac-
cordiug tfi too reports tffus iar received
—aud half the year is now over—the
claims of the respective states will
stand as follows in tbo item of total
gold output for tho year:
Colorado ?24,000,001
California 18.000,0n.
Alaska
South Dakota O.OX'.OOC
Arizona 2,6.49,000
Idaho 2,504,0 X
Montana. 5,000,0 X
Nevada 8.000,00(
Oregon LVIe'UM
Utali 2,50-J,OOC
Total 571.500.00 C

states and territories, whereas the direct

Min ’ luUu'-nr.ins tho Body.
Au account was recently lead at a
meeting of the American Neurological
association which demonstrates very
forcibly the power of the mind over tiio
body. A young woman of good stand
ing after reading a clinical history oi
cases of abdominal tumor became, con
vinced that she was a lii-tim of Unit
disease. She suffered acutely, and bet
friends shared her fears. The doctor l *
believed tho case one of hysteria, aud,
all other methods for relief having
failed, consented to perform a dangerous
operation for the removal of the tumor.
Tho girl was dieted for several days,
her room stripped of wall paper and car
pet and made to.resemble a hospital in
barrenness. Contrary to custom, knives
and surgeons’ paraphernalia were freely
exhibited. Physicians aud nurses stood
around tho operating table, uud tlie pa
tientwas carefully etherized. An in
cision, barely skin deep, was made, and
the girl carefully stitched up in elabor
ate dressings and bandages. When slm
was allowed to recover consciousness,
she was too weak to raise her hand.
She felt the irritation of the wound and
was thankful to find herself alive. Iu
two weeks she was completely cured. —

There is: far too much cureless tying
of marriage knots by ministers. Ke
confly a preacher performed u marriage
cert cony in which the bride was a
child of 11. No doubt the couple lied
to tLi minister and assured him the
child v, as of age, but that does not ex
cuse him for his careless and hasty ac
tion. He should have made inquiries,
which lie could have done easily and
successfully. A man who would know

over a git! of I ! is guilty of little short
of crime, hi inis let sof the goaptl are
shocked at the great and increasing
uutuber tif divorces and f t the whole
weight of their influence against such
untying of the marital knot, but they
never in any case take home the blame
for a proportion of these divorces where
it belong.-;, to themselves.

Beautiful Bird B-ioTr.
It is for the soundest of c-cou nie rea- :
eons that children should be taught to ,
like birds, to study them and to pro- j
serve them from harm. The prosperity j
of farmer and gardener depends in great j
measure on it. Mo docs tho thrifty |
growth of shade trees in town and city ■
streets. Everything that tends to foster j
this affection and care for birds among ,
boys and girls, therefore, is to be wel
