Tho late Earl of Cawdor was the owner of two charming residences in Wales—Staekpolo Court, Pembroke shire, where he died, and Golden Grove, Carmarthenshire —but these were mere pleasure houses by compari sou with the ancestral home of the Campbells, Cawdor castle at Nairn. This fine north British dwelling re mained almost undisturbed from the death of Sir Hugh Campbell In 1716 for a period of nearly 150 years, when It was conscientiously restored by its late owner. Cawdor castle itself had its rise in a fierce and wild age, around which traditions of a hazy nature clus ter. It is a legend in Naim that the murder by Macbeth was committed in an old chamber of the castle tower, and visitors wishing to conduct them selves with gravity and respectful rever ence are expected to receive this story with an expression of solemnity not un tinged with awe. That the “silver Bkin” of King Duncan was “laced with his golden blood” in this parti ular apartment is a fable that need not now be enlarged upon. The ass “came to a sandstill at the russetbura at the third hawthorn from the starting point” and lay down. Curiously enough, as If to confirm this tradition, to this day in the dungeon beneath the tower a haw thorn grows. The other two trees have disappeared, the last one as lately as 1886. Many stirring tales are told of tho later history of Cawdor castle, which came to be left uu tenanted for long years owing to the Campbells de parting for Wales, where they married young ladies with ample fortunes. — St. James Gazette. AS SHE WAS LEAVING CHURCH Her Refusal Drove Hi in Into a Perfect Frenzy. FIRED FIVE SHOTS AW THE GIRL Fatal Ending of a Colored Church Gather ing at Mayavlllo—Murderer Still •t Large. Maysville, Ga., August 23.—Ed Fields, a notorious negro of this coun ty. shot his sweetheart, Virgie Giiffeth to deaih last night on their way home tram church because she refused lrs company. For a long time Fields has been paying court to the Griffetbtgirl, and by many of the negroes it was under stood that they were engaged to be mairied. Last night he escorted her to church at Hurricane Shoals, a small settlement near here: Every thing went well on the way to church, aud during the services the couple occupied the same seat and seemed entirely absorbed in each other. Fields was especially fervent in Ins responses to the prayers, and the two negroes led the singing. At the conclusion of the services the congregation split up into little groups, as is usual, aud Virgie became separated from Ed. She met another admirer, for whom she appears to have conceived a stronger fancy than for Fields, and arm in arm the two started home in the midst of a crowd all all going in the same direction. Field accomyanied the couple, sulking along in the rear and answering all attempts at conversation in a surly manner. Finally the hilarity of Virgie and her new beau became unbearable to him, and tie made his way to the front, aud in atigry tones he demanded that the Griffeths girl walk with him. For a few minutes there was a ter rific quarrel, and in the end Fields drew his revolver, and holding it but a few feet from his sweetheart sent all five bullets into her body, produc ing instant death. Realizing in an instant what he had done, he hurst through the dazed mob, and before a hand could detain bun dashed into the thicket and escaped- Meanwhile the girl lay weltering in her life blood, while the stupefied negroes, supposing her still alive, did everything possible to recall her to consciousness. The news was brought to this place and a posse was organized, blood hounds procured and search for Fields started. He is still at large. The coroner’s jury held an inquest today, and pronounced the killing a murder. The neuroes of the vicinity are greatly enraged at the crime, and if they can get hold of Fields before the officers find him, there wi.l probably be no need fora civil trial.
