March 3, 1879. Way to Oust Reds Is To Oust ’Em THE way to get Communists out I of the government is to get them out. So that when the Dies Commit tee finds a lot of Communists in the Government, there is a howl of indignation. Respectable people, including the president, and respectable newspapers including the best in the land, set up a nowl of “perse cution” and all such rot. Why try Browder and Kuhn if you are to leave their rattlesnakes in strategic government positions. The Dies Committee found a large number of people employed by the Government are Commu nists. Many of these are in high key positions. The Communistic organization in this country has seen to that. And the government ought to fire every one of them. They are there to help destroy the govern ment, to seize it, when and if the opportunity offers. The Dies Committee has found that to be true. Even the most skeptical cannot deny the plain evidence the Committee has un- earthed. Those people are placed, strate- gically, and they lean on the Con- stitution’s guarantee of freedom’s rights. At the same time they are trying to destroy the Constitution and the government that guaran- tees those rights. I Mealy mouthed persons in this country have no cause to be sym pathetic toward those vipers. But something or other. Hitching onto something of ours and trying to hike off with it. That’s the kind of hitch hikers we were talking about, and there isn't much more to say about them. There are plenty of deserving causes. The Red Cross is about to start its Roll Call. Everybody that has a dollar ought to be a member. They are the kind of hitch hik ers that hitch onto somebody’s troubles and hike off with them. That’s the kind of hitch hikers we want around. We want them to prosper in their work. People ought to separate the chaff from the wheat. We ought to have a responsible committee right here in Canton that would pass on all these voluntary sub scription lists. Merchants, business men and others are burdened and embar- rassed by the wrong kind of hitch hikers, trying to ride the other fel- low's money some place or other. And like Mr. Sims said about those on the highways, these mon ey-list hitch hikers will be just as much good without the ride as with it. Leave them where they are. And support the Red Cross Call. Don't say you’ve already given to this and that. The "this and that" you gave to was just a bunch of hitch hikers going nowhere to do no good. The Red Cross is going somewhere to do something worth- while. Week of Thanks Now Is Proposed they are. In all its serious investigations, whenever it has made a slight mis take, those well-meaning and mis guided Americans have leaped up to accuse the committee of failure, —and worse. Of course they were playing right into the hands of the Com munists. Often they were even the dupes and tools of Communists, who had slyly guided them into this foolish attitude toward a com mittee seeking to save America from Communism. The reason for the current attack on the committee is silly. It is made because the list of Commu- nists working for, the government was published, and contained the names of a few who were merely on the Communist mailing list. Well, if those few weren’t Com munists, if they are good Ameri cans, they ought to be pleased to have their Communist associates exposed. The innocent can easily prove their innocence. Instead of charging red-baiting, the government agencies ought to launch a supplementary investiga tion and fire all the Communists from government positions, clear- ing the innocent, of course. Communists are like rotten ap- ples—one will destroy a barrel of Believe it or not, it’s a matter that has split this country almost in half, 23 of the states retaining the traditional last Thursday in November and the other 25 adopt ing the new date, a week earlier, as proclaimed by President Roose velt. Georgia, officially, will go along with the President, who will carve his turkey in Warm Springs on the earlier date. Governor Rivers is to issue a proclamation for the state in accordance with the Pres- ident's visit. It is well said that you can’t please all the people, but we hum bly offer a suggestion that would come pretty near doing it. It’s this: For the first time in history let’s have a THANKSGIVING WEEK, official or otherwise, to begin on President Roosevelt’s Thanksgiv ing Day and ending with the tra- ditional day, so that Americans this year may give thanks SEVEN TIMES more than ever before that we are AMERICANS. The outstanding visitor to Geor- gia for Armistice Day celebra- tions will be Alvin M. Owsley, former United States minister to the countries of Rumania, Ireland and Denmark. Mr. Owsley will address the ex- per house toward a vote on the bill when Senator Clark objected to the chair, saying: “I don’t believe that business will be expedited by trying to railroad this body.” “The chair”, replied Mr. Gar ner, “is not trying to railroad any thing, but there is not going to be any horse and buggy business in this senate as long as I'm running Now We Can Do The “Impossible’ TAX COMMISSIONER’S ROUNDS 1939 I will be at the following places on dates named below for the purpose of collecting State and County Taxes. _ ecutive committee of the American ed any amazing conspiracy to des- | Legion at Macon on Sunday, No- troy the government. Erie Cocke, Atlanta banker, will introduce the distin- guished visitor. While in Atlanta Mr. Owsley will be entertained by Mr. Cocke, Jackson Dick, Major Clark How ell and Edgar B.
