The fact that Cordele don’t whnt us to get another railroad shows plainly that this town amounts to something, and they don’t Want US to have a fair showing. The way to build up a town is for everybody tp put their shoulder to the wheel, and not stand Off and say the load is too heavy and that there is no use in trying. Ida Whitsett colored, who was found guilty Of an assault with intent to murder at the September term of Dooly superior court, was car: led to the prison farm at Milledgeviile Mon day morning. Vienna would like very much to secure the A. & B., .railroad, but they DON’T FAIL TO REGISTER! Unless Yoq Registered When Yon Paid Yonr Tax You Will Have to In Order to Vote in Primary. A question has been raised by a, number of the citizens of the coun ty, as to whether a man will have to register again if he did so when he paid his tax Inst full, in order to vote in the coming primary. In answer to this, we say NoS A re-, cent act of the legislature holds that when a man registers it is good for 12 months, So, unless you registered last fall you will have to register again it you ex pect to vote in the primary. The registration books for each district are in the hands of the jus- ticej of the peace and everybody should take advantage of this op- pot tunity and register. The day of the primary for coun ty officers will very probably be called on the same day us that of the state pruftary, June the 5th, in order to save the farmers as much have more than oned said that they time and expense us possible, JOHN BENNETT IS IIHEIHN MACON HAD LIVED IN THIS CITY Was Shot m His Pistol by Richard Rice Late Saturday Afternoon-Died O’clock. Rev. E. S. Atkinson filled his regular appointment at the Baptist church Sunday morning and evening. A large crowd was out to hear him and he preached two excellent sermons. The ordinance of baptism was administered to three candidates. One of the best things that our people are now working for is tho extension of the Dooly Southern from Richxyood to Vienna, giving ua a terminus and mak ing things mutually beneficial to this city and the S. A. L. railroad. Let’s don’t give up until we have secured the extension beyond a doubt., It would be the best thing Vienna ever done. Contractor W. V. Williams, who has been doing some grading , on the A. & B. about eight miles south of Cordele spent Monday night in the city. Me had along with him about 60 head of mules, 26 scrapes and other implements together with about 30 negroeB. He left yesterday for a point above Hog- crawl creek where he has the contract to grade to Montezuma. The man or newspaper that does not agitate and urge the securing of enter prises that pro for the future welfare and upbuilding of the town in which they reside, is not worthy of the res pect that's due' the engertie and zealous citizen. Talk for your town and work for it. If you are not willing to do thiz keep yonr lipz closed and don’t try to discourage others. Of course brother, this doesn’t mean yon. They nre already behind with their crops and the primary coming at the busy season of the year with them, it-could not be expected of them to lose two days attending primaries when one would answer the same purpose. Myers returned to the city yesterday from Byromville, where he had been to fill, an appointment. He reports that the work on the grad ing of the A. & B. at that place is pro gressing nicely. ' The following is a true story told in verse by a western paper about Mary’s little lamb up to date. May it be care fully read by those who hang around the church doors on Sundays, and also by Mary, who is on the inside; “Mary had a little lamb it followed her to church, and stood around the door, like an owl upon its perch. Why don't the little lamb come in, the watchful people cried? While Mary told the silly thing to watch for her outside. So you, each gentle maiden, may and all still find, some sheephead waiting near the door, If you admire that kind.” Messrs. Smith & Walton finished paying up all the claims of those that they held warehouse receipts for at the time of the burning of tbe warehouse, this morning with the exception of Mr. P, G. Mc- Donuld, who they claim held his own cotton receipts and that- they are not liable for his loss, "which will amount to something over $4,000. Many of our readers are already familiar with the shooting of Dep uty Sheriff John Bennett, of Bibb county, by Mr. Richard Rice in Macon late Saturday afternoon, and who died at the cily hospital in that city Monday morning at three o’clock. Art account of the shooting' given in the Macon papers is as follows: '•There are conflicting statements about the killing. Rice says that it was purely accidental, but Ben nett, s;n;ed to an officer at his bedside that Rice shot him pur posely, because lie had accused him of stealing money. “According to the best informa tion tlat could be obtained, Rice, Bennet and a man named DiiPriest had been out driving. They drove up to Hammett’s bar on Fourth street arid went inr to get a drink and while- standing at the bar Bennett accused Rice ot taking money front him. Rice became indignant and told Bennett that if he had a pistol he would shoot him. oennett handed his pistol to Rice, and said ‘You haven’t got the nerve to shoot.' As soon os he said this Rice fired the fatal shot, the ball striking Bennett just below the heait. Rice then handed the pistol back to Bennett and walked out of the saloon, cume down , town and surrendered to an officer. Bennett took the pistol put it in his pocket, walked out of the barroom and at the same time called for a buck. He was taken heme but later was removed to the city hospital. • ‘Rice belongs to one of the best families in Bibb county and is a son of the late James R. Rice and lives with bra mother about three miles from Macon. Mr. Bennett’s death will be mourned by all ot the county offi cials and especially the members of the sheriff’s office, for he was held in the highest esteem by them, and was regarded as one of the most promising of the young officers. He was full of energy and determina tion to succeed, and bad won u reputation for perseverance. intel ligence and cool-headedness. His good work in capturing the slayer of Mrs. R. J. Roland won him u reputation thut will long survive. ‘Mr. Bennett was buried at Ebenezer church on the Coluriibui. road Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, in the presence of a large crowd.” Mr. Bennetf was a citizen of Vienna a few years ago, and was a brother to Mr. C. I. Bennett of this city. He leaves a young wife and baby to-mourn his death. m TI8 EASY TO FEEL 0000 Coantless thousands have fourd a bles sing to the body In Dr King’s New Life Pills, which positively cure conMlpatlrn, sick headache, dizziness.
