Arab!, Gn., Sept. 19.—At the Chapel
exercises in the auditorium Friday
■ morning, Metz Joiner, the well known
boy preacher was introduced to a large
audience by Prof. L. E. Brown. Metz
gave a very interesting talk upon
“Christian Education," bringing out
some beantifnl thoughts. Col. L. E.
Roberson, prosecuting attorney of Lake
City, Fla., was then then introduced by
Prof. Brown, Col. Roberson lectured
the school upon the value of “Moulding
the Character and Gaining a Reputation
in our Youth.” Rev. J. J. Hyman,
Rev. J. W. Reese, and Prof. Brown also
gave some very interesting talks.
Metz Joiner spoke to a very large
crowd Thursday and Friday nights at
the BaptiBt church.
Col. L. E. Roberson called to see his
daughter Miss Ada Mae, whole attend*
ing the Honston High School.
Charlie Brown is going back to Mer
cer in a few days.
Mrs. Simmons of Marble, Ga., is vis*
iting her daughters, Miss Nettle and
Mrs. Myra Hndley of this place.
Mr. James Brown will teach the
school at Burcli, where he will have a
very large attendance.
The Young Peoples Union at the
Baptist church last night was a great
success.
Rev, J. J. Hyman left for Elko, yes
terday, where he will fill his regular
appointment today and Sunday.

Mrs. Jno. ITayo Dead.
Mrs. John Mayo died at her home
near Byromville Wednesday morning
about 6 o’clock, after an illness of
several weeks with slow fever. 8he
was 28 years old and had beeii a member
of the Baptist church ten years, and
was a good woman. She leaves a hus
band, two little boys, three sisters,
four brothers and parents to mourn her
death. She was a daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Berry of near this city.
Her remains were brought down and
placed in Mt. Pleasant cemetery Thurs
day morning at 11 o’clock in the pres
ence of a large crowd. Rev. J. D.
Norris conducted the funeral services.

Little Kate Joiner Dead.
NUMBER INCREASING
IN VIENNA’S SCHOOL
Kate, the 12-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Joiner 6f Drayton,
died Thursday at 12:80 o’clock, after an
illness of only a few days with hemor
rhagic fever. She was a bright little
girl and the pride of father and mother.
Her remains were placed in the
Collier cemetery yesterday afternoon
at 3 o’clock in the presence of a large
crowd of friends and relatives.
The grief stricken parents have the
sympathy of their friends in their sod
bereavement.
Festival at Mt. Vernon.
The News is requested to announce
that a festival will be given at Mt.
Vernon school house next Wednesday
night for the purpose of raising funds
to purchase heaters for the school.
This is a worthy purpose and everybody
is invited to attend and aid this move
ment in a financial way.
Festival at Byromville.
A festival will be given at Byromville
Friday night, Sept. 20th, for the pur
pose of raising funds to purchase an
organ for the Methodist church at that
place. Everybody is invited to attend
and bring a well filled purse.
My Since tbe Opening Monday.
The attendance in the Vienna Pub
lic School is still increasing and this
term bids fair to excel any previous one
in the history of the sohool. The at
tendance this week has increased from
126 to 140 since the opening last Monday
and a large number of them are board
ing pupils. Following is a list of tho

where they are stopping:

Jim Brewer. Several from the country
come and go every day, and Mrs. J. H.
Morgan has four in attendance; J Riley
Brown, who lives five miles cast of the
city, has four in attendance; J.T.
Jackson of Shiloh, has four in attend
ance ; Wm. Bryan of Pleasant Valley,
Albert Trippe and his two sisters,
Irene and Mamie from near Drayton,
are also in attendance.

At the Opera House.
The Woodford Stock Co., greeted our
people at Heard’s opera house on last
Wednesday night wit'h “The Girl from
Calcutta," interspersed with comic
songs, jokes and dances. From the
applause the play met with tjie highest
expectations, while the specialties were
all good and up-to-date. So pleasing
was the entire program that the mana
ger of the opera house, Mr. Hester has
made arrangements with them to
appear here again next Thursday, Fri
day and Satnrday nights, with a mati
nee Saturday afternoon. They propose
to play standard plays and give a first-
class performance each night and our
theater-going people should not fail to
give them a good patronage.

The remains of MrB. Hattie Achord,

brought to this oity Thursday and car

Wednesday morning about 6 o’clock.
She leaves a husband and young babe,
mother, sister and three brothers to
mourn her death. The funeral services,
were conduoted by Rev. J. M. Kelley
of this city.
Mr. Lewis Called For.
Montezuma, Ga., Sept. 13—Hon
E. B. Lewis has been invited by
the chairman nt the Democratic
congressional committee as one of
the speakers to make several speech -
es in tbe North and West this fall
to aid in Democratic success in a
number of doubtful districts in
those sections. ' Congressman
Griggs thinks there are good chan
ces of auccess in many districts, but
lacks speakers to cover these terri
tories. Mr Lewis may make set era 1
speeches during the campaign.
