QUEER USES OF WORDS.
Unlinppr Mnrrlngen.
Unhappy and unfortunate marriages arc
Curious Expresions Peculiar to the North I <’ f i°° frequent m-currence nowadays unit
and South.
Rehecra Hurt in the Chautauqunn.
It seems the most natural thing
the world for a ‘Southerner in calling
another, to say, “O, John!” but
always seems to amuse our friend
across the way. It is the “O” that
excites their merriment, and in at
tempting to give the peculiarity they
often represent us as saying, “Ho"
John,” which wc never do say.
Another Southern expression which
always sounds queer to Northern ears
is the use of the word “mighty” as an
adverb. But to those accustomed to
it, “mighty pretty” conveys an idea of
beauty that the overburdened North
cm word of “lovely” doesn’t reach,
Turning to Webster to see if it must
be given up, wc find that it is allowa
ble when used colloquially. Good'
Wc should never want to use it
ccpt colloquially.
In the North a man fills liis wagon
“box” with corn and “draws” it to
town; in the South lie fills his wagon
“bed” with corn and “hauls” it to the
same place.
In N ew England they say "the
going” (meaning the condition of the
ronds) is bad; in the South they say
“the traveling” is bad. Perhaps
say the roads are bad would he more
intelligible than cither.
Southerners say “like” for “as if”
as “She looked like she wanted
go.” They laugh at it iu the North
and in the same breutli »ay “as” for
“that”—“I don’t know as I overheard'
it here”—and then the Southerner
laughs and both are happy. So in
grained are both expressions, how
ever, that the delinquents are seldom
conscious cf the delinquency.
A large proportion of grammatical
mistakes are common to the unedu
cated wherever they arc found, hut
there are some which are so peculiar
to certain sectious that their use set
tles at once the question of whether
the person using them is from the
North or South. The expression “I
seen” for “I saw,” is a very common
mistake in tie South and rare in the
North, while “I see him yesterday”
for “I saw him yesterday,” so com
mon, even among educated people,
at the North, is never heard in the
South.
This makes it difficult for writers
who have never lived in a certain
section to imnate successfully the dia
lect of that pople. They are apt to
be betrayed into the mistake of put
ting into the mouths of a certain
class in another part of the country
such words as they would hear 'from
the same clnss in their own section.
This, undoubtedly, is the -difficulty
which many Northern writers find iu
truthfully portraying the negro dia
lect. They take ns models the ue-
i they have known, and judge.
a iu<
that the talk of a South-
groes they 1
incorrectly,
ern negro would be the same; conse
quently, a practiced ear can. almost
always detect the difference between
one who assumes a familiarity and
one who is “to this manner horn.”
The incongruity of making a South
ern negro say, “Whar be you goin’?"
as wc saw recently in some story, i
inexpressibly ludicrous In one famil
iar with their dialect. He might say
“Whar you goin’?” or “Whar is you
goin’?” The honor of the expression
“You be” belongs exclusively to the
North. What he would be most
likely to say is, “Whar you ’gwinc

I am in direct communication with
Johnstown. .Sheriff' Stincman tele
graphs: “All is quiet. I can con
trol without troops. Burgeos Hurl
and Gen. Hastings agree with me.
Good order prevails. No arrests were
made during last night or to-day.
The relief is well organized and care
fully distributed. The medical and
surgical help, and supplies are suffi
cient. Food aud made-up clothing
tor men, women and children are
greatly needed at ouce. The news
paper reports of the loss of lives and
property are not exaggerated. A
large force will be at work all the
morning to clear away debris.” I
will issue a proclamation to the gen
eral public in our own country und
elsewhere for help. I have one sub
scription from England of 81,000. I
will have another communication
from Johnstown about 10 o’clock to
night, the substance of which I will
wire you. The governors of states
and mayors of cities are tendering
sympathy and help. Sorrow like this
makes the whole world akin.
