We are pleased to notice a very
general disposition in this and other
states, to make all executions private.
This has been Judge Hanscll’s rule
for years. Alabama has recently
passed an act requiring all executions to
he strictly private. This romiuds us
that it would he advisable for the
county commissioners, in the erection
of the new jail, to provide a place
within d.hc walls for executions
—provided such a place should ever
again bo needed here.

A Retrospection.
Another commencement of Young
Female College has come nud gone,
Around these occasions linger very
many pleasant memories. Sweet
faces, lithe, willowy forms, arc again
seen in memory’s mirror, as the mind
goes hack, and sees, again, the blush
ing debutants, as they stood on the
stage ns school girls for the last time.
Fond mothers and loving fathers
looked on, while their daughters
were the center of attraction. And
proud parents they were. Many of
theso girls have gone out into the
world, left the parental roof, and are
filling their places in life, making
homes—their own homes—happy by
their presence. Ah, well, they could
not always stay in the home nest, and,
while their sunshine is missed in the
old circle, destiny, fate, or ^whatever
you may call it, has called them, and
new scenes surround them. It is
a long roll—this roll of graduates of
Young Female College. A few of
them have fallen asleep and are rest
ing in quiet grnvc.yards[ resting,
sleeping, unconscious of the turmoil
of life, undisturbed by its cares, and
unburdened by its crosses. They
have gone to a higher school, to
place where purity reigns and where
the study of the infinite God will go
on through the endless cycles of
eternity.
PROF. WRIGHT’S PROBLEM.
Solution by One Who Never Studied
Arithmetic an Hour.
In 1885 the age of the fourth is six
teen years greater than the average
age of the first throe; for he must
lend each of them four years and still
the first three will ho four years
Inter.
In 1889 the age of the fourth is of
course still sixteen years greater than
the average age of the first three. But
in 1889 the united ages of the first
three were twice the age of the fourth
or the age of the fourth in 1889 was
50 per cent greater than the average
age of the other three in that year,
Hence 16 years being 50 per cent of
the average age of the first three in
1889, their average age is 82 years.
And the fourth being 16 years older
is 48 years of age in 1889. II.
A Card.
To the many kind friends, ladies
and gentlemen, who have so consider
ately manifested their sympathy for
and their condolence with us, in our
grievous affliction and bereavement
we desire, in this public manner, to
return our heartfelt expression of grat
itude. May the God of mercy com
fort them, in all the afflictions through
which they may be called to pass
life, and reward them|in heaven, for the
tender interest in the overwhelming
sorrow of a heart-broken father and
mother.
From a note, in his owp hand-writ
ing, found in his own Bible, it appears
that Walter was a constant reader of
Scriptures, with a sincerejpurpose to
obey their teachings, and from our
knowledge of his life wc are encour.
ed to believe that the Savior was with
him as he sank beneath the wave, and
that his spirit rose from the flood and
was wafted by the angels up to hcav
cn and God.
M. C. & Rosetta Davies,
Father and Mother.
Accompanying the above card is the
note left by the drowned boy. It is
in a bold hand, and evidences consid
prablc scholarship. We append the
note verbatim!

NOTICE.
Look Out for Burglars.
Last night two houses in the city
were entered and robbed by thieves.
One of the sufferers was Capt. II. T.
Mash, who lives on tho corner of
Smith avenue and Hansell street.
He lost his gold watch and chain,
mic pieces of jewelry, two pocket
knives and what cash he had in his
pockets. The other house visited was
that of Zckc Hamilton, a well known
ami well-to-do colored carpenter.
Zekc’s pockets were gfle through and
825 in money stolen. The thieves
must have operated in the latter part
of the night, as Capt. Mash’s family
attended connueucemppt and did not
retire until a late hour, and Zeke says
he did not go to bed until 12 o’clock.
’Ingress was obtained in both instances,
we believe, through windows. All
our citiscns should be on tho alert,
not only to endeavor to capture the
thieves but to save themselves from
being robbed.
