FRIDAY JUNE 21, 1889
The shah of Persia is having a high
old time in Europe. His subjects foot
the bills.
A mortgage was recorded in Chica
go the other day for 8150,000,000.
This is a big country.
What would have been the feelings
of St. Paul had he heard Sam Jones
get off one of his slang sermons?
The Way cross post-office was robbed
of 81,100, and a number of registered
packages, night before last. No clue.
No state in the south, or north or
west, for that matter, is making more
substantial developments than is Geor
gia.
The Athens Banner says four new
railroads are heading for that city.
How many are heading for Thomas-
ville?
An imposter,by the name of Schwein"
furth, has appeared in the west. He
claims to be Christ. Of course he has..
followers. His name ought to con
demn him.
Old “Stogy.”
The familiar form and shamble of
Judge Hansell’s old horse. Stogy, with
Jim astride of him, or joggirg along
in harness, choosing his own gait (this
was an unvarying rule of his) will be
seen no moic on the streets of Thom-
asville. The places which have known
Stogy, will know him no more forever
He was—but, now, lie is not. In the
morning he went forth, like unto a
three year old, but even before noon
tide, ere the sun had passed the me-
lidian, while walking around in a med
itative way, reflecting, maybe, on
his past shortcomings, the end
came. As he munched the
green grass and chuckled, perhaps,
at thoughts ol his numerous escapades
and runaways; even in the midst of
these reflections, he disappeared —
disappeared down into a deep, aban
doned well on the Judge’s lot—and
from it he came not forth alive; but
lifeless and limp the old family horse
was drawn out wiih block and tekle.
There was a humorous vein, so to
speak, mellowed by age and experi
ence, in bis make up A friskiness, at
times, which comported not with his
venerable years and careful training,
characterized him. It is proper to
add, however, that these attempted
youthful frivolities, like an April show
er, a woman’s tears, or an old woman’s
dance, were socn over.
When feeling his oats, which was
very frequently the case, he would,
without regard to tightened rein or
bearing bit, strike out on his own hook.
But he always kept the road. After
receiving a lecture, in which his ad
vanced age was generally alluded to
a reason why .he should behave
better, Stogy would jog along in the
most orthodox manner—unless some
horse in front of him tried to leave
him behind. An episode of this kind
always roused him and put him on his
mettle. He never, in the history of
his many trips to Moultrie, failed to
keep his nose in reach of the vehicle
in front of him, especially if the latter
had any provender in it.
Like men, he had his faults; of them
we will not speak, and, like men, lie
had his virtues.
Pennsylvania gives a big majority
against an amendment making tlic
prepayment of a poll tax a prerequi
site to voting. Pennsylvania is ad
vancing back-wards.

Mr. John R. Lewis has been ap
pointed postmaster at Atlanta, vice
John W. Renfroe, resigned. This is
another victory for Buck. He appears
to be a hard one to buck against.
Kassou, of Iowa, is spoken of as
minister to China. Our relations with
the "pig tails” being somewhat strain
ed, it will require some very good
diplomacy to keep the skies clear.
Senator Colquitt, who predicted a
close vote .in Pennsylvania on prohibi
tion, takes the cake as a poor guesser.
*The state only went about 200,000
against prohibition. He would make
a good weather prophet.
Savannah iH still trying to raise
that 850,000 for a new railroad. Only
$31,000 have been raised. If Bruns
wick gets the road, which she may,
Savannah will want some one to kick
her, and to kick her hard. And sb«
would deserve it.
Chandler, who is openly charged
with bribery iu securing his election
to the Senate from New Hampshire,
placed his hand on his heart and
“pledged his honor” that lie was not
guilty. That was a very poor pledge.
The collateral docs not appear, at this
distance, to be good.
Little Billie Chandler, the bloodiest
of the bloody shiners who has been
re-elected to the U. S. Senate from
New Hampshire, threatens to hoist
the old tattered garment again when
he gets back to Washington. Tliis
sort of thing has kept the south solid
And so long as it is kept up, dynamite
v ouldn’t jostle the south.

There is said to be a considerable
amount tf friction in operating the
machinery of the administration. The
difficulty appears to be the want of a
sufficient amount of grease. The
average -epubhean needs to be "greas
ed” both frequently and liberally. Har
rison bas managed to "lubricate” a
good many of them, but thousands
more are howling to be "greased”
The Manufacturer’s Record says
the cotton harvester is at last to be
practically tested. The Mason Har
vester Comtany, of Charleston, who
have for several years been perfectiitg
their picker, have arranged with the
Chattanooga Agricultural Works for
the manufacture of a number of
the pickers in tune for the coming
crop. Mr. John P. Richards, one of
the most < xtensive planters of the
South, after a careful investigation,
has agreed to buy a number, and es
timates he will save £30,000 in the
picking of his cotton crop compared
with hand picking. He says:‘‘I believe
the machine, in its present condition,
will pick cotion at a cost of not exceed
ing 15 cents per hundred, and, as
you know, we have to pay cotton pick
ers from 50 cents to $1.25 per hund
red for picking.’’
A Sensible Friend—What am you

finally run the system down to such a
condition that other diseases are in

Will It be Built?
It is important that Thomasville
keep posted as to the various prospect
ed lines of railway in this section. She
would do well to watch every move
on the chess-board, for they all affect
her more or less. The Tallahasscean
speaking of an outlet for the F. R. and
N. system, says:
Aiming at this consusimation, the
Florida Central & Peninsular Company
have directed competent civil engineer*
to run preliminary lines, as nearly
straight as possible, to points west of
Smithville, Ga.,on the Montgomery &
Eufaula and Southwestern railroad.
One of the lines will run from Mid
way, in Gadsden county, Fla , to Daw
son Ga.,or near that place. The
work is under the efficient direction
ofCapt. H. 8. Duval. He will start
from Midway in a day or two. After
the field notes and estimates of the
civil engineers shall have been com
pared, the best and shortest route
will be adopted.
Cleveland and Reform.
That Ex-President Cleveland is still
on the carpet for tariff rtlorm is evi
denced by the subjoined letter, written
by him, under date of June 11, tc the
Secretary of the Maryland Tariff Re
form Club: “Your letter, inform
ing me of my election as an honorary
member ofihe Maryland Tariff Reform
Club is received. I accept the court
esy thus tendered me,with thanks. The
object and purposes of the club, as set
lorth in the declaration accompanying
your letter, have my hearty sympathy
and support; and I believe their ac
complishment absolutely essential to
the highest developments of our coun
try. You must, however, permit me
to say that so far as parties are con
cerned, my hope and reliance for a
better condition of things is upon the
Democratic party organization, which,
in my opinion, cannot "be true to its
traditions and ancient usages without
hearty and sincere espousal of the
cause to which your club is devoted.”
