A Curious' Calculation.
The dimensions of heaven seem to
worry some people. Thay arc evi
dently afraid there will not be room
for them up there. If the calculation
below is correct there need he no fur
ther apprehension felt on the point.
The main question is getting there.
The twenty-first chapter of Revela
tions gives the measurement. The
most interesting calculation on the
subject is that of Captain J. B. Shar
key, a measurer of vessels in the Bos
ton custom house. He takes the
statement in Revelation xxi ami fig
ures it out thus: “And he measured
the city with the reed, 12,000 fur
longs. The length and the breadth
and the height are equal.” Twelve
thousand furlongs—7,920,000 feet
Cu bed — 497,793,088,000,000,000,000
feet, iteserving one-hal f of th is space
for the throne and court of heaven,
and one-half of the remainder for
streets, we have 124,198,272,000,000,-
000,000 feet cubic. Divide this by
4,096 cubic feet in a room sixteen feet
square and there will he 30,321,843,-
750,000,000 rooms. We will now
suppose the world always did and
always will contain 900,000,000 in
habitants and that a generation lasts
314 years, making in all 2,970,000,-
000 centuries, and that the world will
stand 1,000,000 years, or 10,000 cen
turies, 29,700,000,000,000 inhabitants.
Now, suppose there were 100 worlds
like this, equal in number of inhabi
tants and duration of years, a total of
2,970,000,000,000,000 persons, there
would be more than 100 rooms 1(5 feet
•square for each and every person.
The time for raising the 850,000 in
Savannah, to secure another railroad,
has been extended to the 1st of July.
.Savannah ought not to let this oppor
tunity pass. And we do not believe
she will. There is too much at stake.
Whither we are Tending.
The eloquent Patrick Henry said:
“We can only judge the future by the
past.’’
Look at the past:
When Egypt went down, 3 per cent,
of her population owned 97 per cent,
ofherweath. The people starved to
death.
When Babylon went down, 2 per
cent, of her population owned all the
wealth. The people were starved to
death.
When Persia went down, t per cent
ol her population owned the land.
When Rome went down, r,8o8 men
owned all the known wor'd.
For the past twenty years the United
States has rapidly followed in the steps
of those old nations. Here are the
figures:
In r8so capitalists owned 37I per
cent of the nation’s wealth.
In 1880 they owned 63 per cent.
Henry—Yes, Carrie, I love you
with all my heart. Carrie—It seems
strange, Henry, that you should think
so much of me. Henry—I don’t
know about that. There’s no ac
counting for tastes^'ou know.
