The Georgia Mule. ■JfY PAUL TALTNOK. O uiulcf Thou jjuunt. gray, gawky Gatling On fours! Thou lank, embodied ii” streak. All hail! (Be careful, muses, of his heels ) Thy drooping ears ami languid eyes, Most subtle beast, might well breed dence. But thou shalt not obliquely launch thy heels At me, thou wily rogue! Great Scott! Now I have sometimes seen the unwary youth Of African descent hoisted heavenward. Contorted, writhing, by thy merciless hoot! Then thou wonld’st turn thy luring, blinking eye To gaze upon thy melancholy work, Or lure with basilisk glance some victim new. O mule! Star maker! Dealer in pyrotechnic novelties Thou verily art loaded, c primed From early morning till the steps Of dewy dusk imprint the sky with stars. I would not draw within The magic circle of thy cognizant heels For all the yellow gold White county yields, Or silkrt freights that hither switn from Ind—Dooly Vindicator. eked Jarob T. Renuelt. Joseph W. Thorn. PIIOFES SIGNAL CARDS. CARL DUNDER. He Delivers a Fine Address to the Chil dren of America. Dear Shildren: You vhas all right Doan’ let somebody make you belief dot you daon’ haf some good times. It I could pe some shilds again 1 kick oop my heels like a bird and doan’ care lor nopody. I shall nefer be shmall again, und wear some knee-breeches und play horse mit de broom stick’ und when I reflect on dot I feels some lump in my throat. Vhen a man comes along und says he vhas glad he vhasn’ some shildrens anymore doan’ pelief him. He says so pecause he doan’ take any comfort und doan’ want nopody else to. He vhas lame und cross, und his hones ache, und his head vhas growing bald, und he vhas shealous of you und wants revenge. Maype it vhas better for me dot I vhas a girl, but I doan’ know. It vhas awtul nice to be a sweet young girl und to be called angels, und to haf de poys look at you so shently like a sheep. If you vhas a girl doan’ you he asham ed of it. Dot vhas right according to Hoyle. Maype you can’t climb trees, run out nights und go swimming in der mill pond, but if you go py a circus you vas in de front seals, und some- pody else puys you a ticket to de picnick. If I vas a girl I keep my face so clean as never vhas. I make shust like music. I walk along nip! a nip! nip! nip? I keep my hands white und my hair combed, und vhen somc- hody meets me und says: “Hello, Susan, how you vhas?” I answer him: "If you please sir, my name vhas Birdie, und I vhas’so weller ash nefer vhas.” If I could be a lecdle girl, I learn how to sew, und knit, und make some bread, und split wood, und bring up coal, und v/ash dishes, und hoe in de garden, und den vhas married, my husband would say: "Ah! noble wommans, you vhas der capital prize in dcr lottery!” How bully it vhas to he some hoys. He doan’ have some taxes to pay—he doan’ have some barns dat burn down mit no insurance. Nopody wants to borrow money of him —no gas bills, to pay—nopody comes to insure his life. All he has to do vhas to go py der school house, play marbles, fly kites sec'der circus procession, und catswect- cakes and grow up to he governor. Dot vhas all, dear shildrens. Doan’ you be troubled. It vhas all right You vhas getting along petter a< could be expected by der circumstan ces, und all you haf ter do vhas to wipe off your noses and speak nottings to nopody.—Detroit Free Press. Sticking to Their Land. Pine Ridge Agency, Dak., June 20.—Gov. Foster and Maj. Warren of the commission this morning held n private council with Reed Cloud and the three hnlf-breetls, who arc his recognized confidential advisers. The discussion lasted two hours, but so far as can be learned it had no mark ed result. There seems now to be no probabil ity of breaking the opposition here except by securing the support of in dividual Indians and in this manner disintegrating Red Cloud's fol lowing.
