Taking of the Census.
Washington, July 7.—Georgia
has bein divided for census purposes,
by the superintendent of the census
into six di'tricts.
Florida has been divided into two
districts, the line running east of La
fayette atid Columbia counties. South
Carolina has been divided into four
districts. A supervisor is to be ap
pointed for each district, who is to
receive a compensation based on enu
meration, to be not less, however,
than $500. They will not be appoint
ed until next year. Col. Buck’s rec
ommendations will be taken as to these
appointees in Georgia. The super
visors will appoint the enumerators,
who will be paid according to the
amount of work done.
WHEN WORK REGINS.
The work is to be begun on June 1
next and'to be completed by July 1,
except the enumeration in cities having
over io,ooa inhabitants in 1880, which
must be taken within two weeks Irom
the first Monday of June.
Thirty per cent, is the ratio ot in
crease for the decade, as estimated at
the census bureau. Georgia’s esti
mated population may be put at
2,000,000, round numbers, Florida’s at
350,000, South;Carolina’s at 1,200,000
Some of the provisions ot the census
act for 1890 are interesting. The
superintendent of the census is rtquir
ed to have taken specially "the names,
organizations and length of service ol
those who had served in the army,
navy or marine corps of the United
States in the late war, and who are
survivors at the time ot said inquiry,
and the widows soldiers, sailors or ma
rines." He is also required to have
special inquiry made as to the number
of negroes, mulattoes, quadroons, and
octoroons. The penalties provided by
the act are curious.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW.
Section 15 provides that each and
every person more than twenty years
of age belonging to any family residing
in any enumeration district or subdiv
ision, and in case of the absence of
the heads and other members of any
such family, then any representative of _
such family shall be and each of them 12 051
