Wedding Rings. From the New York World. Y If marriage is not a failure there Ikii'i a question as to tlie imlillereiil regard In wliieli I lie wedding t in” is held. Kren the jeweler has a scnii- coiiteinptMoiis way of presenting the tray of plain gold hands and a tant alizing preferenee lor dismal times, which lie hunts or whistles sofllv lint none the less significantly, as he makes a note of the initials to he in scribed. The very young brides wear tlie yellow hands, hut in swell ciie.lcs young married ladies have the bravado to lay aside the emblem <>l undying love as soon as' the honey moon is over. Among the older wives the ring is discarded altogether, and if you in quire about it the matron will calmly tell you it’s such an unfashionable piece of jewelry to be obliged to wear, and as a result the young lady daugh ters in the family are married with a seal ring, not one of which can he procured for the paltry I”, the price of the yellow band. Kmcralds, rubies and turquoise, set in small but bril liant diamonds, are popular as wed ding jewels, and not a lew bride grooms have wedded their ideal with a marquis of diamonds. A bride ol a month ago was married with a ser pentine ring, composed of two snakes exquisitely carved, each with a prer ious jewel in its head. To show the low degree of enthusiasm lor the time- honored symbol of conjugal love, a I the last coaching club dinner party given in the Brunswick but three ladies out of forty, all attended by their husbands, wore the plain gold band. There were clusters of dia monds, circlets of pearls and solitaire stones by tlie quart, but the single trio displayed tlie simple yellow hoop. (irass widows find the band par ticularly obnoxious, and those gay and festive wives who have a few more links of freedom than is whole some never give it position outside ol the jewel casket. At ilte resorts and in social gatherings one hears fre quent outbursts front the young and innocent society men who protest against what they consider misplace ment of the only badge that distin guishes a married woman from a spinster. Of Course It “Goes.” From the Campaign (Ill.) Times. “Lige,” said the President, scratch ing his head for an idea, “isn’t this Spalding who wants the post office at Champaign a relative of mine in some way?” .‘‘Yes, sire,” said Lige, coloring; "Lb^t is, he is a relative of the family. Hi the brother-in-law of your pri vate secretary.” “Ah, Lige,’’said the President look ing up,“that is rather far-lctchcd, Init it’s all right, 1 would have preferred to give the office to a man who had at least one drop of pure Harrison blood in his veins. But, Lige?” “Yes, Bire.” “Don’t the people criticise me lor ap pointing relatives to office?” “Yes,wire; some of them do.” “Well, Lige, if any one says any thing to you about it, tell them 1 was nominated and eleeted because I was the son of my father, and I am but followiug the same policy. •Spalding shall have what he wants.” Then Lige addressed and scaled an appointment of the President’s wife’s sisteri’s husband’s brother to a S 1,000 post office. “Canra,” said the old mail, “will you have some talers? - ’ “Ifyou refer to the Ittiiiiaeeous tubers which pertain to the solatium tuberosum, and which arc commonly known as potatoes,” replied the sweet girl graduate, “I would be pleasciUo he bellied lo a modicum of the same. But talers ? Talers ? I’m quite sure, papa, that they are something of Which I never had the pleasure of hearing.” The old man pounded on the table until the pepper caster lay down birtjj rest, and remarked in a voice of icy calmness: “Laura will you have some of the taters ?" “Yes, papa.” Is our boasted high school system a failure ur is it not.
