A dear one on her bier, i IS'And the wreathing of n bride. Bright eyes are filled with mirth, Pale faces bend in prayer, And hearts beside the cheery hearth Arc crushed by stout depair! All, sorrow and joy and hope Are parted by thinnest wall, And only on hearts which never ope, No ghostly shadows fall! No thoughts of the funeral train Come to the festive throngs; No hope that joy will dawn again. To stricken souls belongs. The future is e’er a sunny sea To tl e children of joy and mirth; Bnt Only the frost and its memory Comes to stricken ones of earth! Somebody’s heart is gay And somebody’s heart is sad, For light beams bright across the way, And a door with crape is clad ! Sadness and gladness e’er Crowd round us side by side; A sunny smile and a scalding tear, So close are they allied! —Luther Granger Iligg*, in St. Louis Maga zine. Threatened Eruptions. From the St. Louis Globe-Demaerat. San Francisco, Cai.., June 29.— News from Susanville, in the Sierra Nevndas, says that slight earthquake shocks continue, and that the people litre become so accustomed to the constant trembling of the earth that they pay no attention to it. These shocks, however, 1 have revived recol lections of old settlers, who predict volcanic disturbances in the extinct craters, such as took place in 1850. Susanville lies in a high, mountain walled valley, directly cast of Lassen Butte, an extinct volcano, 10,500 feet high. From its summit no less than forty extinct craters can be seen. Cinder Cone, which rises 600 feet above the level of the plateau, was in eruption in 1850. Flames darted up to a great height. Two prospectors visited it, and they found l.akc Sal- fatara, eight miles south of Cinder Cone, a center of volcanic lorces. The lake was a mass of boiling water and mud, and from it vast columns of lame shot up at intervals. Timber in the vicinity was on fire. The region was so dangerous that the prospectors beat a retreat, in which for several railcs they passed over rocks so hot their boots were scorched. They lost a horse and pack mule, and thought themselves fortunate to escape with out injury. This lake has an elevation of nearly 6,ooo feet above sea level and covers an area of four acres. It is surround edby a rim ioo teet h : gh, but the hot water fi nds egress through a fissure. Its borders are marked by small puffing tnudconcs. Jets of gas issues from the water, which no doubt issues from a crater. Within two years there has seemed renewed activity in the inter nal fires, and the present shocks point to the possibility of another great vol canic out-burst which will find vent through some of the old craters. Springs in the neighborhood are so churned by the shocks that the water begins to look like milk, and Eagle Lake is assuming a similar hue. At Big Meadows big springs are drying up, though their flow has always bees constant. “My friend,” earnestly exclaimed the temperance lecturer, pointing a long, quivering fore-finger straight at the cowering figure of a man on the back seat, “what will you do when you come to the end of your career and find honor, hope, friends, home, and all that makes life valuable, or the future chceriug, lost—all lost!” “Lost'!” echoed Mr. Rambo, dimly conscious that a question had been addressed to him, “b’ George, I’d (hie) advertizhe!’’ The hottest weather ever known in the United States was recorded by the United States Signal Service at Phucnix and Fort McDowell, Ari zona, in June, 1883. The thermome ter then marked 119 degrees. The coldest weather ever reported by the service was 69 degrees below zero, at Poplar River Montana. fef® GEORGE FEARN, REAL ESTATE AG1\T, •fFICK IH MITCHELL HOUSE BLOCK.
