The Smiths-and the Slushcrs Ready to

Chicago,III., Aug. a.—A dispatch
from Louisville, Ky., says: "A fierce
quarrel has broken out between the
Smiths and Slushcrs, near l’ineville,
over a hog tvortli $2. T he home of
the Smiths was attacked on Saturday
last by the Slushcrs and a volley
poured into the house, which put
holes through the door and broke
several windows. The Smiths re
taliated by putting a. guard armed
with Winchesters on the Slushcrs’
road to Flat I.ick, the nearest village.
Both sides are now well armed, and
are. watching lor each other. Inci
dentally all travel along the road pass
ing through the vicinity is cut off. ’
Mrs. C. S. Gaulden Dead.
The many friends ot Mrs. C. S.
Gaulden w ill be pained to learn of her
death which occurred at the residence
of Mr. John Tillman at 3 o'clock
Thursday morning August 1st. Mrs.
Gaulden was born in Monroe county
Georgia, January 5th, 1824, her maid
en name being Charlotte L. I.eSucur.
She was married March 261b 1846 at
Lumpkin, Ga., to Col. (.has. S. Gaul
den. Mrs. Gaulden lias been a great
sufferer during several of the last years
ol In r life but bore it all with the pa
tience and resignation that became
one of her Christian faith and spirit.
She leaves four children to mourn her
loss. Mrs. John Tillman, Mr. W. T.
Gaulden and Dr. S. S. Gaulden of
Quitman and Mr. I) L. Gaulden, of
Titusville. Ida. She was buried Fri
day morning at the family burying
ground on the Gaulden plantation in
this county.—Quitman Free Press.

during the summer session, to pass a
law equalizing taxes? "There is a
much needed reform in this line,which
the legislature might profitably tackle.
There are many conscientious citizens
paying more than their share of taxes,
and, as a consequence, there are many
citizens—not so conscientious—(we
put it mildly) who arc not paying their
share of taxes. Let boards of assess
ment even up things.
Every newspaper in the state, to the
best of our knowledge and belief, with
that public-spiritedness, so to speak,
which characterizes the fourth estate,
have lent their valuable aid to the leg
islature, in shaping ami directing the
course and kind o! legislation, which
will, in their opinion, best subserve the
interests of the people. This course
is highly commendable. A sclf-sacri-
ftetng set, these same journalists.
When the best citizens of a town
get together and resolve to pull in
harness, and pull together, that town
is bound to grow. It has secured
something better than northern capital
or outside labor; it has developed its
own strength and spirit. The best
means of development are tlyasc which
the people arouse in themselves. And
this spirit is invincible when every
body feels it.—Ex.
Some of the original projectors and
stockholders in the East Georgia and
Florida Railroad have brought suit
against the Plant system, alleging
that the latter, who bought the unfin
ished road pome vein s ago and have
failed to construct the same, to the
detriment of the complainants. It
will be remembered that the. Plant
system bought the projected line to
prevent it from being built into
Jacksonville,
The name of the liar is not given,
but it comes to us by way ol the In-
dianpolis News that a citizen ol Lima,
(Cal.) has just finished working up a
fir tree which grew on his place. He
received $12 for the bark, built a frame
house 14x20 feet, 8 feet high,, with
kitchen 8 feet wide and 20 feet long;
built a wood shed 14x20 feet;. made
330 fence rails jo feet long; made 334
railroad lies and 5 G0 boards six inches
wide and two feet long and 15 cords
of wood, all from 0:1c tree, and has
part of the tree left.
