;The Women of the South.
The following is the peroration of
an address delivered hv ( . E. Merrill
at Jackson Tenn., July 11, tss.i:
And what shall I say of her (laugh
ters ? () jewelled womanhood of the
Southland! Thousands upon thou
sands have done virtuously, hut ye
have excelled them all I A\ lien name
the dreary days of death, disaster,
and defeat—when upon their Imwed
hopes darkest fell the night—-they sat
not down to weep beside the waters
of the social and political llahylon
which flowed all 'round about, hut
stripping the jewels from their lin
gers, laid them upon the insatiate
alters of sacrifice, and, with hands all
unused to toil, bent above the wash-
tub, and plied the shuttle as il such
labor had been the one duty and
pleasure of a lifetime. What shall I
say of our women? Ah, in the pres
eucc of heroism like theirs the pulse
beats tenderly and slow, and lips,
though touched with In Mowed fire,
grow still and motionless and dumb!
Through all that long pitiless night, if
tears were shed, cold, silent and
dark, they were shed in secret, where
no eye could see, and for the bus-
hand’s, the father’s and the brother’s
sake they wove smiles and sunshine
alone iuto the warp and woof ot daily
toil, O, typical woman of our South
land, scarred and desolate, yet sad,
tender and sweet ns angel’s dream of
heaven and home—time, “time the

less hand the monuments reared to
human glory -the pen ot history may
drop listless trom the grasp of him
who shall essay to tell the story n
the far summers that we shall not
see, the, echo of thedeathless .-ong may
linger and lie lost among the distant
hills of eternity. Vet thy single vir
tuous name, 0, woman of the South,
shall gleam a beacon star in heaven’s
firmament forever.
And now may it be said of her that
she looketh well to the ways of her
household, and eatctli not the bread
of idleness. Her children rise up and
call her blessed ; her husband, also,
and he praiseth her. She risctli while
it is yet night—the long, dark night
of poverty—and giveth meat to her
household and a portion to the needy.
She layeth her hands to the spindle,
and her hands hold the distaff.
Strength and honor are her clothing,
and may she yet rejoice in time to
HE MARCHED WITH SHERMAN
TO THE SEA;
Trudge*! :ill tin- way on foot, over mountain
and through morass, carrying knapsack and
gun, slept on brush heaps to keep out of the
mud, caught cold, from the effects of which
his friends thought, he would never recover.
Lingering with slow consumption for many
years, ho saw Or. Pierce's Bolden Medical Dis
covery advertised in a country newspaper,
and he determined to fry it. A few bottles
worked a change: six months’ continued use
cured him. Always too independent to ask
his country for a pension, h»* now says he
needs none, lie helped save his country, he
saved himself! Consumption is bung-scrof
