AN ALLIANCE OFFICER
Has Words of Advice for Farmers and
Merchants- -There is no CauseforWar
Between Them The Fanner is
Only Socking the Recogni
tion of His Rights
Babkesvili.e, Ga., August 25.—
T’ditors Constitution: As your paper
is rend by more of the agricultural
people, and perhaps by more of our
alliance brethren than any other now
published in the State, and knowing
there is a feeling existing in some lo
calities between the alliance men and
the merchants, also those engaged in
other vocations, which should not be,
and believing that this feeling is
brought about for the want of a prop
er understanding between the differ
ent classes, I write to give you and
your many readers my views on this
subject—one which, in my opinion,
should he properly understood hv all
classes. I tind with a great many of
the brethren a feeling of hatred to
ward the merchant, also the same feel
ing existing with the merchant toward
the alliance.
It is all wrong, and should not he,
and no one now a member of this
grand and noble institution should
encourage any such thought
will not do so if they understand their
duty as an alliance man. .Wither
should those engaged in oilier pur
suits think because they are not eli
gible for membership in the Farmers’
Alliance, that we are organir.ii),
against them. The}' place the wrong
construction on the order. They for
get that other classes arc organized
for their special benefit, and that far
mers arc not expected to come into
their meetings, from t lie fact that
their business relations are not the
same as ours.
They seem to have sonic doubts as
to the reality of our organization, and
have not yet fell in line. But all such
business men have discovered that
there is nothing new in the principles
upon which the alliance is founded.
They are the foundations of all hon
est government, and without them
siicii government cannot exist. The
foundation of the Farmers’ Alliance
means protection and self preserva
tion, and these principles are as old
as the rnee of man. Our declaration
ot purposes teach us that it is our
duty to constantly strive to secure en
tire harmony and good will among
all mankind, and we should remem
ber that wc are all one people
together, nil Americans, laboring un
der the same great oppressions, and
the various institutions, with all the
public enterprises of our common
country, and should not lie arrayed or
suffer themselves to become impaired
against each other by any spasmodic,
madden folly. Society is made up of
farmers, merchants, doctors, lawyers,
preachers, teachers and editors. It
requires all of these to form that, great
compact of human intelligence. Each
is necessary for the greatest good,
hence we all become important fact
ors, mutually dependent upon each
other for protection ot life, liberty and
property. All must admit this; yet
the agricultural people arc discrimi
nated against not only by our national
government, hut equally so by that of
our state. ’Tis true wc produce, to a
great extent, the wealth of this nation,
and as a class, arc growing poorer,
while those engaged in other vocations
arc increasing in wealth. Many
times when we place an article on the
market for sale, wc lail to get what it
cost us to produce it. Is this from the
cause of over-production? Certainly
not, and no one well informed will
say so; but from the fact that the
laws of our government w ill allow in
dividuals to combine their capital, and
by such, control the prices of the
farmers’ produce until it gets out of
his hands, then force it up to double
the price it was lirst sold for. Tliii
keeps the farmer poor, keeps him in
debt, and the interest will continually
cat up his farm and make him and
those lie so dearly loves and labored
so hard for their independence, ten
ants or slaves to these moneyed kings
These are questions of a momentous
nature—questions that give the solu
tion of our dilapidated condition,
socially and tiuancially; questions that
if not met with prompt and speedy
action upon the part of the laboring
classes*, will subvert our government
and make us and our loved ones
slaves to this heartless class.
Then, brother Alliancemen, wc
have no fight to make agaiuet our
merchants, unless they show fight
first; then fight to the hitter end. No
merchant, who lias the good of his
country at heart, will oppose us.
While our doors are closed against
them, they should he our friends and
we theirs, and I believe, Mr. Editor,
I voice the sentiments of the mer
chants of Harncsvillc, and other
towns in our county, when I say they
arc ready to aid us in every way ]
silile to defeat any trust or combine
that has for its purpose to fleece llic
agricultural interests, and the same
relations should exist with our - wind
people, and until it docs we will never
accomplish the objects sought.
