Col. Derby and the Flag. From the Denver Newr. Some three or four weeks ago ( <>. Coutautof Lamar arrived at the Hotel Ramona, at Cascade, Cof. I>erl>y, the malinger, shook him by the hand, scanned his features earnestly for a moment, ami inquired : “Mr. Coulunt, were you ever in London, Ontario ?" “I was tliorc once,” replied Coutant, “about 1SG7, 1 think.’ “Was pretty certain it was you,” said Col. Derby. “You were at the Tecumsch House on the night it was attacked by tiic mob.” The two shook hands, and the tee oguition brought out the following story: Col. Derby was a native of Mont gomery, Ala., and was an ardent and enthusiastic Confederate. After the close of the war lie drifted into ('amt- da and became manager of a promi nent hotel in London. During the excitement of the Fenian inva-ion a very hitter feeling, as will he remem bered, existed all over Canada against the United States, and one evening a mob assembled about Col. Derby’s hotel in London and demanded that he pulldown the stars and'stripes which he had floated over the house. The Colonel very politely but firmly declined to comply with tlio demand. Then the excited Canadians proposed to take them down, and Col. Derby began vigorous measures for defense. The street was packed with an angry crowd, and its leaders were evidently bent on raiding the hotel. One Hag hung outside just above the door, nod this the mol) succeeded in pulling down by driving nails into a large pole and forming a hook, with which they tore down the stars and stripes. But when they attempted to enter tin- hotel to rcaclt the flag on the dome of the building, they were met by Col. Derby and the few Americans wito happened to lie stopping at the hotel, who swore they would kill the first man who offered a further insult to the national flag. There was a dang crous glitter in the eye of the ex-Cun federate colonel as, with his revolvers, lie faced the Canadian mob and warn ed them back. The American con quered. The mob hesitated, fell back dispersed, and the old flag continued to float over the bold so long as Col. Derby remained its manager. The incident has its lesson, and illustrates not only the personal bravery oi tin man, but also the love of the . Ameri can for the llag, no matter what uniform lie may liavo worn dur"ig the civil war. "Tht-rc was a frnj. who lived in n sprint?, Hi- eantrht si teli n cold lie could not sint,-. Two of them are in well known coin collections to day, however, and they arc the most vnluableof all American coins. Why the dollar of 1801 was never seen in circulation after leaving the mbit is one of the unsolved government mysteries. It is asserted on good nuthoriiy that the two 1801 dol'ars now in existence, while having been made from the original die, were in reality not coined for many years after that year, when they were xr-repti- tiously struck, and, it is supposed, issued to a person high in authority, from whom they subsequently paused into the collections referred to. The half dollar of 180-1 is surrounded by a mystery equally profound. There were over 150,000 of these coined, but not one of these were ever known to be in circulation. On the other hand, but 700 quarter dollars were coined in that year, and specimens of tlie-e are in every collection and numismat ist’s shop.”—Philadelphia Press. I)I MINTIv J.
