A VERY OLD CLAIM.
George Washington Mortgaged the White
House—It is Yet Unpaid.
Washing©#,ffiicpt. 2.—Recent; ag
itation about building a new and more
expensive presidential mansion, lia:
brought to light an old mortgage
the White Ho.use that has been for
gotten or lost4(ght of for a long time
Mf. M. B. /Harlow, secretary and
treasurer of tfie Mt. Vernon avenue
association, in an interview about the
- proposed new executive mansion, says
£ «i am glad to .sec the subject agitated
Our association, to whom the Virginia
legislature has transferred its claim
against the government for money
borrowed by General Washington to
build the present structure, will pro
sent that claim, and nsk for payment
\ for the old before it commences the
new. The claim, which is for 6120,-
H 000, has never been denied by the
1 government, nor can it he,- for we
have the promise of the government
made through Washington, to pay the
money back to Virginia should it ever
H be able to do so. We will not, per-
K haps, ask jibe claim to be paid in
money, but Will probably suggest that
Congress defray the expenses of build
ing the proposed national highway to
K Mt. Vernon. If they will agree, we
will transfer the Virginia mortgage on
the White House as her contribution
to the project.”
