Coney Island, New York’s great sea side resort, has been almost ruined by a tidal wave. The legislature has passed the law- electing the commissioner of agricul ture by the people. Iceburg Edmunds endorses the constitution of South Dakota. This ought to defeat it. Another horrible White Chapel murder occured in London yesterday. The London police ought to hire out as farm laborers. • The Department of Agriculture puts Georgia’s cotton crop down at 90 per cent, in its report from Wash ington yesterday. Only one state, Florida, is rated higher, Florida’s crop being put at ill. The lowest average is in Virginia, being 02. To Stop Dueling. Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 9.—The House is tired of afternoon sessions, and to-day, adopted a lesolution dis continuing them. Mr. Glenn introduced a bill to-day, aimed at the present method of work ing up a duel so as to evade the law which provides : “From and alter the passage of this act, if any person shall send or deliver to another person, any messages, either in writing or otherwise, the intention of which is to lead to, or provkoc or bring about, directly or indirectly, any meeting or conferences between any persons to arrange for the passage of a challenge to fight a duel, or for the purpose of bringing said parties gethcr to lead to either ot such pur poses beyond the jurisdiction of this stat^, all such persons shall, upon conviction, be punished as prescribed in section 4,310 of the Code, or, if the jury shall direct by their verdict im prisonment in the penitentiary for any time not less than one year, nor more than five years.” Why Was It Rejected? At the recent national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic a resolution was offered containing the following clause, which was indica tive of its intent and meaning: “The pension roll is a roll of honor, and it was never the purpose of the people nor the spirit of the laws cm acted by their representatives that any man who proved false to the oath of service by deserting his coun try’s cause in time of war or other wise deserving dishonorable discharge should receive the honor and reward of enrolment among the brave men who suffered and were faithful.” This resolution was submitted by Gen. MacMahon of New York, one of the bravest and most efficient of the leaders of the federal forces in the late war. It is impossible to lodge a responsible objection against this pro posed expression of the G. A. If. Jt merely says that the brave and faith ful men who suffered in the war between the states deserve pensions, but that the cowards, bounty-jumpers and camp followers should not be placed on the same footing as the gallant fellows who did their duty. And yet these resolutions were reject ed by the national encampment of the Graud Army.—Ex. Sleeping Car Fares. Mr. ’Hull’ set at once to establish the good faith of his efforts to reach Sulphur Springs, and at midnight furnished the press a Iengthly correspondence between him self and Mr. Illicit to-day, in which it is clearly shown that Mr. Huff' acted strictly under the instructions of his second in going to Columbus, from which point it became impossible to reach Sulphur Springs till Monday morning after the Patterson party had returned home. An important meeting of the Geor gia Fruit and Melon Growers Asso ciation will he held at Albany, Ga., to-day and to-morrow. A call l'nr this convention was issued by the ex ecutive committee, about a month ago, and melon growers front Middle and Eastern Georgia tire especially invited to attend this convention. Matters of vital inlercs to all melon and fruit producers will he considered. Among subjects to he taken tip are: 1. Dishonest and irresponsible com mission merchants. 2. Excessive freight rates north of the Ohio and west of the Mississippi. •'1. Overcharges on rates named in bills of lading. 4. Irregularities in weighing ears and inaccuracies in the weights as charged. All parties having complaints to make against commission merchants, or transportation companies, are ex pected to present them with proper proofs in each case. The association is determined to weed out the thievish produce brokers who continue to fleece the melon growers from year to year. An Experienced Opinion. T. Itanium. Not far away—only a few steps down on lower Broad. Mrs. oJeimie Carroll, Lower Broad Milliner. A O’AIM). In retiring from the firm of Fite k Beverly, I do so with reluctance, as my connection with this business and my partner, for the past year and a half, has been of the most pleasant nature. Mr. Iluverly, my successor, needs no introduction to this community and the trade at large, as he is well known as a gentleman of sterling worth, and as a thorough mil! and business man has but few superiors. He will be as well prepared as heretofore to accommodate the trade, and I bespeak for him that support that has been so liberally extended this mill in the past. Very Respectfully, * J. G.
