John L. in Congress. From Texas Shifting?. Speaker of the House (impatiently) —Who is that gentleman interrupting the proceedings by thumping the desk so loudly ? John L. (angrily )—It’s me John L. Sullivan—and I’ll thump you if you don’t pay attention! Speaker (concilliatiugly) Ah, beg pardon, Mr. Sullivan; didn t see who it was. But another gentleman was speaking. You know parliamentary rules John L. (scornfully)—I don’t know parliamentary rule.-, never fought-un der ’em—but when it comes to Mar quis of Queensberiy rules or London prize ring rule Member (in a back seat)—I call the gentleman to order, (lhen lie ducks his head.) John L—Order ’em yourself; J called ’em on last. Speaker—A gentleman stood up before you, Mr. Sullivan. John L.—For how many rounds? (Scornfully.) His name wasu t Kil rain, was it ? Anti-Trust Representative (hland- ly)—Before the honorable member from Massachusetts interrupted me, I was endeavoring to show my position with regard to rings. John L. (striking an attitude, as there wasn’t anything else to hit) This is my position with regard to rings. How do you like it ? Anti-Trust Member—The rings I allude to are John L.—Sixteen loot or twenty- four foot? It doesn’t make any dif fercncc to me. Speaker—Perhaps i* would be as well for the gentleman from Massa chusetts to come to a finish. John L.—Fight to a . finish, you mean. That's what I always try to do. But Mitchell wouldn’t stand up to it, confouud him 1 Speaker—I must beg you, Mr. Sulli-van, to confine yourself- John L.—Confine myself! Not much I won’t. And the governor of Mississippi won’t confine me, cither not if I can get out of it. Speaker—But it is hard work John L.—That’s the devil of it. Hard work lor one year. But it s an insult to the congress of the United States. Think of a congressman be ing cqjifined to hard work even for a day! Speaker (despairingly)—Business cannot be carried on in this way. I feel like throwing up— - John L.—The sponge? Speaker—No, the gavel. Impatient Member—I call for the previous question. John L.—A new kind of teddy, 1 suppose. Well, make nunc a little sweet.” (And the Hon John I>. sat down.) A Big Purchase. The Central railroad has bought a pretty piece of property in Hoboken, N. J., for 8450,000. It will be used for naval stores, lumber, pig iron, and perhaps cotton yards. The purchase was made with a view to providing increased facilities at the notbern terminus of the Cen tral’s and Ocean Steamship Company's line, consequent upon the rapidly in creasing western traffic. The proper ty was the last of the available sites along the Hudson river, and if the Central had delayed the purchase it would have been without a site for the handling of its increasing busi ness.—News. “Can't I stay home from church with you, pa, just to-day,” pleaded small sinner Bobby. "No, RoberLfcyou must go with your mother.” Then he added to his wife, as he slapped his morning paper into position : “I believe in my mother’s old adage. ‘Train up a child in the way lie should go, and when he is old he wifi not depart from it ’ Iafe.
