An Advertising Dodge.
When the defendant took the stand,
his honor said:
“Prisoner, you are charged with hav
ing removed the goblet from the hand
of the Cogswell statue, substituting
a pair of two-bit suspenders, with a
placard attached, calling attention to
your establishment across the way. ’
“Well, shudge,” replied the offender,
with an ingratiating smile, “of gorse I
vants to get along in pccscness.”
"After which,” coutinued the court
sternly, “you substituted a lot of neck
ties tor the suspenders, and attached
to the other band a lot of bills refer-
ing to your stock of gum boots and
hair oil ”
“Dose hair oil is fust rate, your hon
or,” said the defendant. “Ivould like
to sell you a pottle.”
“And yesterday,” continued the
court, consulting the indictment, “you
obstructed the thoroughtares and
raised a disturbance by placing a pa
per collar and a plug hat on the statue
in question.”
"Dose plug hats is sheep at $4,
shudge. Moses Levy scarghcs fife und
a haluf vor detn same kind,” returned
the trader cheerfully. “I beats dose
fellers efery dimes.”
"And at night,” went on his honor.
"It appears that you place in the fig
ure’s hand a transparency containing a
further advertisement of your wares.
Now, this is most improper and rep
rehensible.” “Dot’s right, judge,” said
Mr. Solomons, delightedly “Bitch into
me oaf you please. Spheak loudt, so
dose noospaper fellers can hear you,”
and he smiled benignently upon the
reporters,
"Great heavens!” thundered the
court, as a frightful idea struck him.
"Is it possible that you have the au
dacity to use the machinery of this
coutf as an advertising dodge?”
"Dot’s it, dot’s it, shudge,” exclaim
ed the cheap John, rubbing his hands
exultantly. "I svorc oudt der gom-
plaindt myself.”
Two western men were rivals for tlje
hand of a pretty maid. They were
inclined to settle the matter by a duel.
When the girl learned of the affair she
sent for them to meet her at the hour
set for the fight, and after reminding
them that duels were unlawful and
that the victor would be a fugitive
from justice the rest of his days, she
suggested that they run a foot race,
her hand to be the prbe. The young
men accepted the proposition, and she
umpired the race and walked off with
the victor.
“William,” exclaimed'Mrs. High-
strung, as she laid down the paper,
"There is likely to be a war with Eng
land over Berhing sea.”
“What do I care?” growled her
spouse, who took no interest in
miltary matters.
"I don’t care what you care or don’t
care,” returned Mrs. Highstrung with
.some vehemence. "This war is about
seals; and if England wins, they can
charge any price they want to for seal
skin saques, and I ain’t got one yet.
If a war breaks out, you've got to go
' and fight for ycr country, d’ye hear?”
Ted—Arc you going to call on that
heiress this evening?
Ned—No, not with this terrible
cold.
Ted—What difference docs that
make?
Fed—Why, my boy, in these days
an heiress isn’t to be sneezed
