Remarkable Englneeeing Feats.
It is a remarkable fact that nothing
surpasses in modern ‘engineering the
pyramids of Gliizeh, built more than
5,000 years ago. It is universally ac
knowledged by the highest profes
sional authorities on architecture and
building that the masonry of the pyra
mids could not be surpassed in these
aiH and, morever, is perfect for the
purpose for which they were intended,
above all, to endure. After the build
ing of pyramids was commenced it was
the fashion for about ten centuries to
build huge, meaningless, pointed piles
of masonry. Of the hundreds erected,
abour 70 have resisted the ravages of
ages and may still be seen. Many
of those remaining contain
enormous blocks of granite, from
30 to 50 feet long and wieighing
from 300 to 500 tons, and display the
most consummate ingenuity in their
construction.
A more difficult operation than the
mere transportion of immense stones
—that of erecting obelisks weighing
400 tons—was performed with precis
ion by the Egyptians 300 years before
the time of Christ. Of the ancient
method of raising immense stones,
nothing is now known—it is one of the
many lost arts. The ancient Peru
vians had a method of transporting
immense blocks of stone that would be
a fortune to the modern engineer, did
he possess it. The Romans were also
eminent engineers, and, by some au
Ihorities, are set down as exceeding
even the Egyptians in this direction.
Immense stones were used in the con
slruction of the temple of Baalbec. One
lies ready quarried, 70 feet' long
and 14 feet square, and weighs 1,135
tors.

To Whist Players.
The Spirit of the South, published
at New Orleans, La., announces that
{n about three weeks it will establish
a Whist Department under the editor
ship of N. B, Trist, Esq., the origina
tor of the “American T.cads” and the
highest authority on the game in the
United States if not in the world.
Mr. Trist will begin at tho beginning
and explain the game in its elemen
tary principles; gradually increasing
the scope of bis lesssons until they
embrace the whole subject of the
science of whist. His articles will be
elaborately illustrated by means of
• card type, showing all the hands
around the board and how to ploy
each in their turn. Mr. Trist will
also conduct a correspondence column
in which he will answer questions as
to knotty points in the game, occur-
ing in actual play.
The best way to profit by these
lessons will be by forming club3 of
four and discussing the points of each
lesson and putting them into imme
diate practice, but tho system of in
struction will be 60 easy and simple
and so thoroughly illustrated that any
one can learn it without any other
assistance.
Whist is the most facinating and
scientific of all games of cards, and in
fact a knowledge of the game is al
most a badge of gentility among card
players. It is the favorite game with
the English clergy, and it is univer
sally popular among ladies, albeit a
cynical writer has observed that no
woman can learn to play whist, be
cause it requires the faculty of silence.
In the large cities teachers of whist
are in great demand and earn large
incomes.

., ? I don’t know much about dying
, for anybody, though I believe that a
fellow wouldn’t mind taking over his
sweethearts toothache or headache
for a time. He might stand a bad
cold or a few doses of quinine for the
sake of his love, but I doubt if the
ordinary kind of love would stand
. much more or even os much repeat
ed several times.
“Darling, aroyou ill?”
“Oh, my tooth aches so,”
“Let me kin it away.”
•‘There. You’ve got it.”
"Give me my hat. I’ll go down to
the dentist and have the tooth out.”
That would be a very convenient
plan for the girls, but I fear science
will never discover anything so simple
and satisfactory.—San Francisco
