Words of Wisdom.
How much the wife is dearer than
the bridal.
A wise man in bis home should find
a wife gentle and courteous, or no
wife at all.
Nothing flatters a man so much as
the happiness of his wife; he is always
proud of himself as the source of it.
’ A right of opinion is not consistent
with a dependence upon another to be
taught what the opinion shall be.
Don’t be afraid ol wild boys and
girls; they often grow up to be the
best men and women. Wildness is
not viciousness.
Man will not obstruct civilization by
acting his honest convictions unless
they lead him to interfere with anoth
er, who, by the same right, chooses to
act differently.
Fools with bookish knowledge are
, children with edged weapons; they
hurt themselves, and put others in
pain. The half-learned is more dan
gerous than the simpleton.
In all evils which admit a remedy,
impatience should be avoided, be
cause it wastes that time and atten
tion in complaints which, if properly
applied, might remove the cause.
' . Whatever you do, do it well. The
slighting of a task, because it is ap
parently unimportant, leads to habit
ual neglect, so that men and women
degenerate insensibly into bad work
ers.
People are not so much taught by
the expressions of others as they are
encouraged, when such expressions
coincide with their own opinion, for a
man is a mere machine who depends
upon the opinion of another.
The richest genius, like the most
fertile soil, when uncultivated shoots
up into the rankest weeds; and instead
of vires and olives for the pleasure
and use of man, produces to its sloth
ful owner the most abundant crop of
poisons.
I have lived to know that the great
secret of human happiness is this:
Never suffer your energies to stagnate.
The old adage of “too many irons in
the fire’* conveys an untruth. You
cannot have too man)-, pokers, longs,
all, keep them all going.
Sincerity (according to Tillotson) is
the most compendious wisdom and an
excellent instrument for the speedy
dispatch of business. It is like trav
eling in a plain, beaten road, which
commonly brings a man sooner to his
journey’s end than by-ways, in which
men olten lose themselves.
Take a Paper.
Nothing presents a sadder commen
tary upon the present condition of
society than the largo number of fam
ilies, both in town and country, but
more especially in the latter, that
subscribe to no paper of any kind.
Hundreds and thousands of families
are thus growing up utterly ignorant
of what is transpiring in the world
around them—ignorant of tbe mighty
events of the day. But who can tell
the vast amount of injury that is be
ing inflicted on the rising generation
—those who are to take our places in
the busy world at no distant day—
* . growing up without any knowledge
X, of the present or the past; this ignor
ance being imbued into them by the
sanction of those who should, and
. doubtless do, know better, did ’they
only'think of tho injurious effects of
their insane course. Let the head of
every family think of this, and place
in the hands of those for whom he is
responsible, the means of acquiring
some knowledge of the moving pano-
"*" rama in which we act our different
