A Kissing Drill. After a few military evolutions, tho lines are halted with all the girls on one side of a space four feet wide, and all the boys on the other. The superintendent takes his place at the head of the lines. “Attention I” he shouts, and every boy and girl straightens up with the hands at the side. “About face!” The lines face each other. “Present arms!” The toys and girls stretch out their arms toward each other. “Ready!” every one draws a long breath and puckers the lipsj “One”—a short step for ward. “Two”—another short step and the arms are crooked slightly preparatory to embracing, “Three” •—and the simultaneous smacking of scores of kissing lips resound like the rattling of musketry in a skirmish fire. “Hell" in Japan. The Japanese language has equivalent for our word, “hell,” but has the name, “jigoku.” Jigoku con sists of eight immense hot hells, rang ing one beneath the other in tiers. Each of these hot hells has sixteen additional hells outside its gates, like so many ante chambers, so that there are in all 136 hot hells. There are also eight large cold hells, each with its sixteen ante-hells, making the same number of cold hells as there are hot hells. Besides these 272 cold and hot hells for offenders of the common sort, the wily Japs have arranged for twenty mammoth hells of utter darkness, into which will be consigned the lost spirits of children who take the name Dia Busta, or Great Buddah, in vain. The entire line of the Alabama Midland railroad is now graded from Bainbridge, Ga., through Ozark and Troy to Ada, on the Northwest and Florida, with the excption of a few miles at Troy. The line hns been in operation between Bainbridge and Ozark for some time and the track is . now lain to near Troy. It is expect ed to have trains running into Mont gomery by December 1st. Tho sur vey of the Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and Memphis, the extension of the Alabama Midland, has been complet ed to near Tuscalooso. A plan is said to be under consideiation of continu ing this line beyond Tuscaloosu, on to a connection south of Jasper, with the Birmingham, Sheffield and Ten nessee river road, and then running over that line to Sheffield, and build ing from there to Milan, Tenn., con necting with the Illinois Central, which would give a new line to the Atlantic coast from the Mississippi Valley, the Alabama Midland being operated in harmony with the Plant system. The West Virginia groom who was to have been married recently was on hour late in reaching his bride’s home. When he got there he found that she had just been married to bis best man. She expected him at least an hour before the timo set for the ceremony, and when he did not ap pear she became a trifle annoyed. Half an hour after the time she was in os fine a temper os can well be imagined, and fifteen minutes after that she asked the best man to take the bridegroom’s place. The girl was young, good looking and well to do, and the best man was handsome buLpoor. He demurred for an in-, stant'and then gave in. At the Opera—My dear sir, how much your daughter has grown this last summer. I can scarcely believe it. Why, her dress scarcely reaches to her shoulders.—Fliegende Blaetter.
