A burglar, or burglars, entered the residence of Mrs. S. H. L. Mash, a widow lady, who, together with her daughter, Mrs. Chaires, resides in East End, on Friday night. The family were in the front rooms of the house, when the burglar, thinking the coast clear, entered the kitchen, which con nects with the pantry. A few minutes later, Mrs. Mash, in locking up the house, unknowingly locked the burglar in the kitchen; but he unfortunately escaptd,after securing a small quantity of lard, floor and meat. The burglar next made his appearance at Capt. Sam. Moore's Miss Bessie, his daughter, saw the sash being lifted, the fingers of a negro raising it. She gave the alarm, and the family, on investigating, found where a barrel had been placed on the ground, under the window; but the burglar had escaped. A Very Narrow Esoape. A white man—a stranger here— was knocked down twice yesterday afternoon while making two unsuc cessful attempts to board the fast mail from Savnunah, as it was going out for Chattahoochee. As the train was somewhat behind tiino, it was running at a high rate of spcea at the time, and to those looking on, it seemed almost impossible that themau should escape unhurt, after being knocked twice almost under the very wheels of the cars. , We wero unablo to learn his name, for, after being unsuccessful in board ing the train, no got up and followed GIVEN AWAY! 1 Barrel Flour. 1 Box Tobacco. 1 “B” Ham. 1 Box Cigars. The Sugar cane crop is short, but there Is a good deal of sweetness to the running foot. ' . Thrco fine deer were placed in a wire enclosure, in Glen Arven, yester day. ' The enclosure is about thirteen feet high, and contains several acres. Major Quigley, ho of the Mitchell, the man who knows as much about the hotel as the one who built it, put in an appearance yesterday. Propri etors and lessees may change, but the Major is a fixture. F. & W.-Ry, nt Cairo, was in the Reduced Rates, Tho S., F. & W. will give round trip tickets over their road, on the 15th, good to return on the 16th, for one fare. This will be an inducement to our friends at a distance to come and see us and take in tho fair and barbecue on next Friday. Tournament The gentlemen that will partake in the tournament ride on Saturday next must assemble at the race grounds on Tuesday morning next, horseback, to practice, sharp 6 o’clock. Knights. Ought to give us the Carpet trade of of this section, Stabbed Him in the Baok. Willie Ervin, a colored boy about 15 years old, was arrested and lodged in jail yesterday, charged with assault with intent to murder. It seems that Willie and another boy named Jim, were engaged in a fight in a suburb of tho city Friday night, when the Ervin boy stabbed' his opponent in the back, though not seriously. Ervin claims that he cut him while the boy was hatting him with a stick. [)•;* | The First Prize. Messrs. J. C. & L. Daniel, of At lanta, Go., took the first prize for the finest and best display of shoes at the exposition—Atlanta Constitution. Jack Curtright, of tho firm of Curtright & Daniel, says he keeps the same line for Thomaaville and is confident he will take first prize at our fair on the 15th. Among tho visitors who arrived lost night for tho season, we noticed Mr. Geo. R. Foltz, wife and child, and Mrs. Lou Wilcox, of Akron, 0„ Mr. Jno. H. Fry and wife, of Detroit, Mich., also Mrs. H. E, Bellows, and Mrs. Bush and child, of Boston, Mass. Mrs. Peters has received a telegram from her son, Charley, from Denver. He is on bis way here, and will prob ably arrive to-day.
