It is evident that the quality of cotton bagging which wo have had to use this season docs not fill the bill. Wo must have heavier, wider, and stronger bagging, or else our cotton must be put up in smaller bales. There is no doubt of the determination on the part of the far mers to press the fight for the rec ognition and acceptance of cotton bagging as a substitute for jute, and to make the opposition less formida ble and more easy to overcome they must have a quality of bagging that will serve its purpose much better than that which wo havo been com pelled to use this year. Cotton bag ging, to meet all the requirements, and he thoroughly acceptable, should cover the cotton ns well jute, and should be strong enough to bear rough handling. We see no reason why the mil's cannot make it wide enough and strong enough for these purposes, and our people should begin at once to agitato this highly important matter, and not wait till the last hour when it will be too late to procure what they need and what thov must have, if success is to crown their efforts.— Cuthbert Enterprise. This year the crop is a failure in that state, and what few it has produced are of inferior quality. Michigan looms up as the banner apple-bearing state this year, its crop, Mr.' Hellings estimates, being x,ooo,- ooo barrels, the heaviest crop it has produced in ten years. The ap ple ’ product of Michigan is, it Is thought, over halt the product of the United States. Southern Illinois has raise a fair crop, bnt the fruit is cloud, edand otherwise inferior, while on the contrary, the Michigan product is the finest ever grown anywhere, and of a great number of varieties. Mr. Hellings’ advices from the west are to the effect that the crop is being ship ed away veiy rapidly, not only to the east, but farther west. The growers are disposing of their fruit at once, only keeping over enough for their own use. Mr. Hellings also stat.ed that his firm was shipping apples to Boston and New York at an advance over Phila delphia prices. Last year Europe received 1.300,- /boo barrels, and so greatly are the American apples preferred there, that its people are already clamoring for them even at the advanced price. The indications are that so much of the 1 reduced crop of this year will be ex ported as to make a severely felt scarcity in this country later in the season. New York state alone pro duced 1,500,000 barrels last year, to -• few or almost none at all this year, i, and had not Michigan come to the rescue, apples this season would hare been a luxury instead ot a necessity.
