Divorces.
Statistics which have been carefully
gathered and compiled by Mr. ( arroll
D Wright, federal commission r of
labor, show that from 1 S(iG to 188(i,
more than 840,000 divorces wore
granted in the l nited States. I
increase in die number of divori
during this period was 150 per ten
while die increase in the populate
of the country was only 00 per ret
Illinois heads tho list of states in do
figures with 80,072 divorces, most
them granted in Chicago, of emirs
Ohio is a good second with 20,00
and Pennsylvania comes third
1(5,000. These statistics were gath
ered by direction of congress, and
there is a growing demand for federal
legislation on the subject of divorce.
With that matter congress certainly
has no legislative concern, hut the
marriage laws of some of the states
are so shamefully lax anti the hopes
of uniformity in state legislation mi
this subject so slim that the demand
for a summary, though unconstitu
tional, remedy is easily understood.

Success has its penalties. Govern

to remember came from his former
congressional colleague, Hon. B. A
Enloc, of Tennessee, and read as fol
lows : “Hon. James E. Campbell.
