It needs no lowering of flags on government buildings to perpetuate his memory. This will probably lie denied by the republican administration, but tbe name of JefT Davis will be revered, cherished and perpetuated wherever freedom and liberty’s votaries are found. The Southern people mourn his loss. Radical hate has only bound Mr. Davis closer to the people whom he loved and served. But he has gone—gone to join Jackson, Lee, and Sydney Johnson, and the heroes who illustrated the South in the late war; gone to join the silent majority, the countless Southern patriots who have “crossed the river and are resting un der the shade of the trees.” And they will greet their great Southern leader over there. A few days • O a well known lawyer went l" .lie jail to see a prisoner, and he had to pass Woolfolk’s cell. Wool folk called to him and commenced talking to the lawyer, and told him that the night previous he heard the cries of female voices calling loudly for help, and that he saw strange figures. The jailer and the inmates of the jail all declare they have never heard the cries nor seen the figure of which Woolfolk speaks. The suppo sition is that a remorseful conscience is at work, the imagination *is distort ed, the mind : s becoming affected, and Woolfolk fancies he sees and hears what does not exist. It is said that Woolfolk’s eyes do not look as natural a ; they once did.
