Stamps by the Mile.
Uncle Sam printed just a few
1 Tstage stamps during the year
18U8 The number of two cent
stamps issued during the year was
about two billion five hundred
million. Such a number, obvious
lv, is beyond the grasp of the
human mind, but perhaps the
matter may be made more clear
by putting it otherwise.
Au ordinary two-cent stamp is
exactly one inch long. From this
fact, by a little calculation,'it is
easy .to discover that the. number
of stamps of this denomination
issued in 18!)8 placed end to end,
would extend a distance con
siderably exceeding thirty-nine
thousand miles. In other words,
they would make a continuous
’'strip of stamps each one adorned
with the head of the Father of
His Country stretching in a belt
more than once and a half around
the equator.
Says an exchange: “Third
notice.” Every editor has re
ceived them. The postmaster is
not to blame. For instance, there
was a man by the name of—well
Tim Short, who scut uu three
notices to stop his paper; he did
not want it any longer. We
wondered what was the matter.
Upon inve-itigatiug the sub
scription boohs we found Tim was
Bboit $2 50 He has never paid a
cent and yet he stopped his paper
as a tu itter ot economy to us. A
few evenings ago we stepped into
the church and Tito's melodious
tenor rang out loud and clear in
that soul stirring song, ‘Jesus
Raid it All.’ The next day we
sont him a receipt in full, beg
ging his pardon for not knowing
he had made an assignment of his
liabilities to the Lord.”
The porous plaster may he a
good thing, but it has it's draw
backs.
All things couie to him who
waits—bad luck iucluded.
The Louisville Evening Post
thiuks future wars will be con
ducted on an outline somewhat
after the following.
It. says:
“If we are to have war hereaf
ter it must be a war so arranged
that no one can regret it
“It, must, be a war in which no
one can be hurt, and all wounds or
death being in violation of regu
lations must be investigated by a
congressional committee.
“There must be an abundance
of food and it must be of the most
varied character.
“Water must he Apollinaris
water, exclusively furnished in
ice bottles.
“Eggs must, he ‘laid on the ta
ble' at every meal.
“Men must not he permitted to
overtax themselves.
“Guard duty must be performed
by some eccentric contrivance.
Soldiers must all be kept within a
climate to which th *y have been
accustomed.
“All campaigns must be ar
ranged after the summer heat and
before the winter cold, and all
rains must be forbidden.
“Transportation bv sea must be
arranged only in a calm, as sea**
sickness unuerves a soldier as it
does a private citizen.
“In other words, war, instead
of being a long tragedy, must be
a long, sweet gong—a regular
honeymoon, iu fact—and sol
diers must be encouraged to en
list in the same regiment as their
wives. If they are not married
they must be ordered to marry.
“Instead of forced marches trol
ly lines must be constructed ahead
of the army under some inter
national agreement. Assaults
must be bloodless, and any na
tion using anything hut blank
cartridges and smokeless powder
should be excluded from benefit
of clergy.”

I A druggist in Macon, Ga., says: “I
have sold a lf.rge quantity of Mother’s
Friend, and have never known an in
stance where it has failed to produce the
good results claimed for it. AM women
agree that it makes labor shorter and less
painful."
Mother’s Friend
is not a chance remedy. Its good effects
are readily experienced hy all expectant
mothers who use it. Years ago it passed
the experimental stage. While it always
shortens labor and lessens the pains ol
delivery, it is also o" the greatest benefit
during the earlier months of pregnancy.
Morning sickness and nervousness are
readtlv overcome, and the liniment relaxes
the strained muscles, permitting them to
expand withoutcausingdistress. Mother’s
Friend gives great recuperative power to
the mother, and her recovery is sure and
rapid. Danger from rising and swelled
breasts is done away with completely.
