Agent for Nettleton Men’s Shoes—The World’s Finest The Nation’s Needs Come First Any patriotic American would glady stand aside and give his place—anywhere—to' an officer on government duty. The placing of the Bell telephone system at the disposal of the government, as was done when war broke out, involved the same patriotic obliga tion. During the months of military preparedness, the War and Navy Departments had the service of the most comprehensive and efficient telephone system in the world. And it must be kept so. In the face of the unprecedented demand from pri vate sources, every government need must and will be met. The government comes first, but we are do ing everything that science can suggest and that money can accomplish to maintain our general service at the usual standard of efficiency. A loyal organization is working continuously to meet the increased demands and your patient co-opera tion will prove helpful and inspiring. Telephone users can help by avoiding useless conversation and by encouraging their employes and associates to use the telephone only when necessary during the busy hours of the day, and to make their conversations brief. With this patriotic attitude of the public to ward us we can serve the government first and render a service that will meet the requirements of the commercial and social world. Editor Times Enterprise, Thomasville, Ga. Dear Sir: Early in the month of February wo had a visit paid us by the State Dairy Inspector, Mr. H. L. Bran ham, and we hope to have this visit repeated once a month untill the dairy situation shows such improve- ment that all dairymen can afford ' to see their ratings published with out detriment to their business. Any dairyman whose business is hurt by publication of his rating for cleanliness is not giving the public a fair deal. He is a menace to the ^ health of his customers, and if lie persists in keeping a dirty place, his sales ought to fall off, just as his sales should be boosted and his business benefltted by publication cf a rating that shows he appre ciates the importance and serious ness of the situation and is deter mined to sell his customers a clean and wholesome food and not a dan gerous poison. We do not single out dairymen because a scape goat is needed to furnish material for articles on sanitation. The reason we must Keep eternally behind the clean milk subset is be cause disease germs' have singled out the dairyman as a man who pro vides them with an ideal environ ment for their growth and develop ment, and if the said dairyman dont fight the germ by continued ana sanely directed efforts, his milk will be poison instead of meat. The dairy situation is on the mend, but there is much need of more modern equipment in some "i. v places, as means of facilitating the work of keeping clean, and hence, monthly inspections from now on by the Agricultural Department, and later we hope this will oe done reg J ularly by the Health Commissioner and the rating of dairys published in the local papers for the informa tion of the public. Consumers of Milk Note Well. Recently when on one ot these visits to the dairy3, thj Commiss ioner of Health saw a delivery wagon returning to the dairy load ed with used botles all unclean. When a consumer of milk re turns an unwashed milk bottle to the dairyman he violates a 3tate law and is guilty of a misdemeanor, whether the courts evsr get him or not. A dirty milk bottle, with wholly or partially dried milk adhering to the walls of the vessel, is very hard to cledn, throws much more work on the dairyman, raising his ex-* pense again, and makes It trebly doubtful as to whether those bot tler get back to the consumer safe or poisonous. Another thing—dairymen claim that consumers use their bottles for other things than milk, and even put such things as kerosene oil, gasoline and lard into them. This is not only lard on me dairyman who have loaned you their bottles for your convenience and protection, but It is a violation of a State law, and If you use a dairy man's bottle for any other pur pose than the one for wnich It was loaned to you, you are guilty of a misdemeanor, and your returned dirty bottle is the plainest evidence of your guilt. If you ha«o ween thus guilty, don’t do it any more. Again, “Persons or families hav ing an Infectious and contagious disease shall not return to dairymen any receptacle or bottle which was it*, their possession at the time of the discovery of such disease until the person and premises are declared free of disease, unless such bottles are first properly sterilized or disin fected. During the period of illness such persons or families shall fur- nisli his or their own receptacle for milk.” Mr. and Mrs. Consumer, have you been consciously or unconsciously violating the above State legulation? It was made for your protection. Lets be careful in the future. Lets ash out our milk botties while the milk is fresh therein, and while it is easy to wash them. Lets not use the dairymen’s milk bottles for other purposes than the rne for which he loaned them to us; it is not our bottle ,it is his. Lets be sure that we return every bottle he brings to the house and re turn them clean. This will not only help the dairyman to get clean and wholesome milk to us, hut sets us right with the law—we are law- abiding and not ’’lawless 1 ’ citizens. And then finally we nil reap the benefits by having less sickness in I he community in which we live. JNO. SCHRE1BER, Com. Health, Thomas County.
