Mr. Gallivan declared that while he had no candidates of his own he would not support Representa tive Garrett Tennessee, acting Demo- cratic leader, because of hw vote against the soldier bonus. Ha said he also opposed Mr. Garrett because he vote for and amendment to the retire ment act “which would prohibit any federal employe from receiving the benefits thereof if he had sHany time bees *lHed with any labor union or any organisation of auch character." CORELESS APPLE HAY BE PRODUCED Montreal, Dec. 11.—(By Mail) Much enthusiasm was evoked at the hall meeting of the Pomological and Fruit Growing Society of the Province of Quebec by the announce ment of the discovery at Abbotsford of a seedless and coreless variety of the Famense apple. Professor F. C. Sears of tha Amherst (Mass) Horticultural coHegt who was present, examined the'fruit and prononnced it Fameusa in every essential detail. He said if it ; could be reproduced it would prove of great value. The seedless apples was discovered by accident and the exhibitor had no idea how it'was developed. He be lieves, however, that the variety could be perpetuated by grafts. i known feet that engaged hold bands. So they do after MBlsc* only then the h as bind Im “ to let go.—Exchange. FORCED TO RESORT TO HERN MEASURES Dublin, Dec. 80.—William Cosgrave, in a statement last night to the Asso elated Press, explained the necessity for the Free State government to put into force Its stern measures of presslon against the dissident factions in Ireland. Leniency has proved inef fective, and on behalf of at least 98 per cent of the people, the govern ment had found it necessary to make tha Republicans “realise the iniquity of' the destruction and the degrada tion and misery they were bringing the motherland.” Mr. Cosgrave’s state- "The leniency hitherto shown by tbe government, which la representative of at least 98 per cent, of the people, having had little effect on the rank and file of the irregulars, and n all on their leaders, it became sary to take stern measures to restore “Until recently prisoners tal ambushes and armed robberies, rested even for deliberate murder oi unarmed soldiers or civilians, merely were Interned in the hope that lenient treatment when compared with that meted out In the past by an alien gov ernment, would soften their hearts and make them realize the Iniquity ol the destruction and degradation and misery they were bringing on the motherland. "Far, however, from havrag this ef fect, the assurances of safety and com fort on capture made every robber and evil-doer a camp-follower of the ir regulars, helping them in robbing banks, smashing railways, etc., and generally living as parasites on the community. Even the irregularo in prieon were urged by their leaders to defy all regulations, and taking advan tage of privileges afforded them, they went so far in one case as to attempt to burn their place of detention, and In another to smuggle in arms for a surprise attack on the guard, with the result that some ifere killed or wound ed, while the Imprisoned leaders con tinued to smuggle instructions to those outside, thus actively identifying them selves with the devolpment of the ir regulars' policy. . “This wap a situation that could not. be allowed to continue indefinitely If the nation was to live. Their lead ers made no secret of the fact that the production of Chios was the means they looked to to make tiie government impossible and to prevent the Free State from being finally established. “The Dali Elreann, therefore, l solved to set up military courts, e: powered to Inflict the death penalty for specific offens£' • f • A long period was allowed to elapse before sentences were carried p.qt A majority of the irregulars did hot take the matter seriously. They had mis taken gentleness for weakness, and had lived in the delusion that the gov ernment would be afraid of public opinion to act drastically. "Far from relaxing, therefore, the leaders became more desperate In their methods, until at last they hit upon the expedient of declaring the government and parliament illegal and its members ‘rebels against the republic.’ "They had failed to make any of a atand against the army in open fighting; they had failed as lignally in guerilla tactics, they had then at tempted by methods of wholesale de struction to bend the people to tbelr will. Again they failed and in despair they had taken up the definite policy of assassinating deputies in order to reduce the people to Impotence by de priving them of their leaders. A Under the absurd pretext of de fending the republic against ‘rebels’ And fortified in advance by pi dd of the most lying and degraded kind, directed against the government and army which bad treated them with consideration which amazed all ■ervera, these armed guerillas, repre- denting actually less than one-half of one per cent of the population, led their dupes to the very point of eating members of the dail, Zean Hales and Patrick 0‘Mallle being the first victims. “The government had no option but to combat this deadly policy in the-, only plain and effective manner avail- j| able, and, accordingly on the day fol lowing the attack on the two deputies, they executed four Irregular leaders. The government, biding nothing from the people of Ireland who support them in such an overwhelming majority, made no effort to camouflage their ac tions and the people have repaid trust with trust. We are acting in tbe sure knowledge that we are doing the best tor our country and that ultimately the simple principles of majority rule —armed man. servant or unarmed man —will triumph in Ireland as elsewhere. The shameful Irregular propaganda now being carried on in America is a demonstration of the type of mind the rernment has had to deal with. ‘The British have left out country finally, and forever. Not a single British soldier remains in the Free State. The royal Irish consabulary replaced by an unarmed civil guard and Irish courts are functioning all the country. Full authority Is In the hands of the Irish people and the next election, a few months hence, all men and all women over 21 jwill have the right to vote. "With God's help we can look for ward to the day when Ireland, united and free, shall have reaped the full fruits of her sacrifices and her tri umphs.” WINESAP APPLES These apples will not rot.
