‘l9th which has just. come under my
observation, appears an article over
the signature of-“ Enquirer-,, which,
without openly espousing, inferentially
argues in favor of the .policy of repu
diating. our State - debt. Such a.’
thought is repugnant to the impulses
of every honest heart. It is true the
close of the war finds our citizens un
expectedly stripped of much the larg
er part of their productive capital.—
As individuals, many are penniless—*
all reduced in their pecuniary'circum
stances. This, however, is not true of
the State to the same extent. A large
amount of material on which revenue
was raised has changed’ its name, but.
does not cease to exist. It may be
freely admitted that tigs change has
injuriously affected almost every other
-source of revenue, Pet I cannot* be
lieve that with wise legislation respec
ting the proper subjects of taxation,
and judicious management of public
property-the State of Georgia will fail
‘..to raise a sufficient amount both for an
icconomical administration of her af*
‘fairs and the gradual reduction of her
indebtedness. . The task may be a lit- j
tie hard. The burtheh onerous ; but
.what so heavy to an honorable mind
as a sense of lost integrity —a reputa-.
tion blasted by wilful repudiation of*
honest obligations. During the period
of uncertainty through which we have
just passed, our citizens, reposing con
fidence in the good faith of the State,
eagerly sought investment in her se
curities trusting that whencesoever

honor of the State would _ ■ un

" There is.as much connection be
tween the words-and thoughts as there
is between the thoughts and the words ;
the latter are not only the- expression
.of the .former, -but they have the pow
er to re: ct upon .the soul,. and leave
the stain of their corruption there. —
A young man who allows himself to
use one vulgar and profane word, has
not only shown that’ there is a foul -
r upon Ids mind, but by the utter
ance of that word hc’ extends lliat spot
and inflames it, till, by indulgence it
will pollute and ruin, the whole soul.
Be careful of.your words as well as
your thoughts. If you can control the.
tongue that no improper words are
pronounced, by it, -you will soon be
able, also, to control the mind,-.and
save that from corruption. Youexidi j
guish the-fire by smothering it, .or by
preventing bad thoughts bursting out
in language. • Never utter a word
anywhere which you would, be asham- ■
ed to speak in the presence of tbe
most refined female, or the most reli
gious man. Try this practice a little
while, and you will soon have com
mand of yourself.
