the stable of the aforesaid Gandy and
tried to tell him a horse belonging

Alderman was suspicious and imme
diately asked various and sundry
questions trying to entrap the negro.
This be finally did and locked him in
the stable and sent for an officer to
investigate. The negro was very
much disconcerted and cried for
mercy time and- time again but the
detective was firm and after Investi
gating the story of the aunt and find
ing It a myth had him locked In the
JaH.
Upon the asking of his name the
negro swore that It was Swan (decid
edly black swan too) and this was
found also to be a myth. A man
from Montlcello In the city Identified
him as another party and he admit
ted It after the proper persuasion.
The horae belongs to a man In Mon
tlcello and was taken there by the
negro who wanted to sell him and

Basket Ball Game.
Friday night the Y. M. C. A. will
be the scene of the warmest and most
hotly contested basket ball game of
tbe season. Both teams to play are
on their metal and want to win. Boih
hare played the same team and both
have lost their game, giving them, a
percent of zero against 1000 for the
other team. The one of these which
wins will Increase Its percent and
materially affect the chances of the
other to win the penant. There Is' a
small admission tee to t$n cents.

The action of the city council
Monday night In placing a license of
ten thousand dollars on locker ^j^bs
was a wise nnfi commendable move.
While there does not seem to bVany
special necessity In Tbomntville for
this law at this time; there may be In
the near future and as n precaution
It Is and will be prohibitive. The
sentiment ot tha town Is against the
locker dubs almost unanimously
and they will welcome this license.
It was rumored that one was to be
I put In here and very soon, on ac
count of the fact that there was no
license In the city prohibiting K. It
was probably this rumor that in
fluenced the action of the elty fath
ers on the matter. The state It pro-,
hlbitlon and tbe town has been eo
for many Veara. It has prospered
and grown without the peetlferious
stuff, there Is no reason why this will
ot go on to even greater height*.
