As part of Chancellor Hitler's move to make Germany a ‘‘One Party
State,” Boy Scout headquarters throughout the Reich were seized
and scouts forced to enlist in Nazi youth organizations: In this flag
ceremony near Berlin a troop leader takes the Nazi oath that merges
' his scouts with the National Socialist Party.

President Roosevelt, a cotton
grower himself, in his message
to the Southern farmers, describ
ed as “absurdly low” prices he
has received for cotton grown on
his land near Warm Springs, Ga.
“Greatest Importance)’
“I want you to make it very
clear that 1 attach greatest pos
sible importance to the cotton ad
justment campaign,” he said in a
letter to Secretary of Agrciulture
Wallace. “It is our first major
attack on the argricultural de
pression. :
“I know that for the past two
weeks the representatives of the
farm adjustment administration
have been presenting to the 2,000,-
000 producers of cotton the hard
facts of -supply and demand, but
the real question is, are the cot
ton growers ready to recognize
these facts and seize their oppor
tunity?
“l myself am one of those who
as a planter of cotton has suffer
ed from the absurdly low prices of
the past few ' years. What lam
concerned about, is the price of
cotton pext. year if cotton acre
age is net re?nced,
“Ther@ are two reasons why
every cotton grower should go
“long with the government's nat
lonal responsibility. ‘The first is
the patriotic duty of making th_e{
plan a success for the benefit of |
?he whole country; and the secondl
1S the personal advantage to every
cotton grower in helping as an
Individual to reduce an over-sup-'
bly of cotton and - thereby obtain
@ better price for what he grows.
_ "The responsibility rests on the
- Individual grower, and I believe
I that we can get substantial unity

cotton producers for this program

VICE PRESIDENT OF
POWER COMPANY IS
CALLED AS WITNESS
(ContinueG From Page One)
done to Georgia by bringing natur
al gas here “but I don’t concede
that the chairman is solely respon
sible for bringing it here as 1
imagine the gas company which
spent the money to get it to At
lanta had some little part in doing
that.”
Savage said he did think “nat
ural gas rates are too high and
should come down’.
The governor said, despite Sav
age's protest, that he would call
the witnesses Perry suggested.
During Collier’s testimony it
was brought out that electric rates
in Savannah where the system is
operated by the Savannah Electrie
Power company (not affiliated
with the Georgia Power company)
are higher than they are in Bruns
wick or in the littld city of Wood
bine.
“Well,” interrupted the governor,
“what excuse does the commission
give for that?”
Arkwright explained that the
commission had averaged the cost
bf providing service of the Georgia
Power company and had mads
rates over its entire area uniferm
and that the Savannah rate was
necessarily based on costs of the
Savannah company’s operation
alone.

RICHMOND, Va.—(#)—What
Governor Poliard didn't know
about girls named California
would—and does—fill a special
correspondence file, .
The governor told of it Mon-
day. f
His trouble started during
last year's governors’ confer
| ence in Virginia. Governor
Pollard, in the company of
Governor Rolph of California,
and Governor Case of Rhode
Island, made a speech for the
[ talkies.
| What he said went some
thing like this: “Virginia is a
grand old state. She is the
mother of states, and the
mother of presidents. Mothers
name their daughters Virginia.
I But, you never heard of a
~ mother naming her daughter
Rhode Island or California.”
In the following months he
heard of plenty of mothers who
named their daughters Califor
* nia. He has heard from the
daughters, themselves, \le has *
heard from them in such great
volume that a special correspond
ence file had to be opened; in
such great volume that he ran out
of all of the polite Virginia gen
tleman apologies he ever heard of;
in such great volume he finally
resorted to a form letter of apol
ogy.
Some of them were nicely indig
nant. Others were just indignant.
* “But, I never heard a word of
complaint from the daughters
named Rhode Island,” the Virginia
governor added.
Karl Cermy, Austrian inventor,

of combustible liquids and gases
