Paul Brown Will
Suppert Hamilton
For Augusta P. M.
ELBERTON, Ga.—Representa
tive-elect Paul Brown Wednesday
said he would recommend Thomas
J. Hamilton, editor of the Augus
ta Chronicle, for the postmaster
ship at Augusta.
Mr. Brown said he did not
know whether Mr. Hamilton
would accept the appointment bt
felt his long service to the sec
tion deserved public recognition.
He said many “worthy citizens
]had applied for the place but tpj:
lall would concur in the selection.
of Mr. Hamilton, one of the first

in personal work. !
“I know of no citizen of Augus

longer unselfish service to com

Hamilton,” Mr. Brown said. “He
is likewise well known and es

support of Democrotic principles
and policies. }
"My decision to recommend Mr, |
Hamilton’s appointment as post
master is, of course, no reflection
‘upon the qualifications of those
whose applications I have receiv-l

in this recognition of one of their
fellow citizens who has been out
standing in his endeavors to de

Tax to Affect All
\ :
~ Spinners, Dealers
WASHINGTON —(AP)— When
the cotton processing tax of 4.2
cents a pound goes inio effoct on
August 1, a floor tax on cotton
goods will also become effective
on stocks in the warehouses of
spinners, manufacturers and
wholesalers.
Retailers will have 30 days be
fore the tax becomes effective od
their stocks, but they will be re
quired to submit an inventory of
cotton materials on hand as of
August 1. This inventory can then
be checked against the goods on
hand 30 days later.
New cotton goods obtained by
retailers in the meantime, on
which either a processing tax on
the raw cotton or a floor tax by
processors and wholesalers has
been paid, will be non-taxable.
Later when the flow of cotton
goods is entirely from new mate
riols on which processing taxes
been collected, manufacturers,
wholesalers and retailers will not
be directly concerned in its col
lection. >

ABROGATION OF
LONDON. —(#)— Great Britain
has asked American holders of the
1917 war loan bonds to accept ab

permit conversation from 3 1-2 per
cent to 2 1-2 per cent sterling
bonds.
An offer was made to chanse
each SI.OOO hond into a sterling
bond of 260 pounds—at the rate of
$3.84 against the $4.86 parity,
reached Wednesday by the dollar
and pound.
The explanation was given that
recent American legislation pro
vides that gold obligations can be
paid in currency ‘“which at the
time of payment is legal tender
for public and private debts” and
that “payment of interest and re
payment of ptincipal . ... can only
be made in currency or coin whien

In American quarters it was said
England is within her rights ‘*in
cffering to exchange even at par,
inasmuch as the gold bond is legz
ally a paper bond in the United
States now.”
The bonds were floated in th:
United States in the rorm of one
and two-year gold notes and wers
converted upon expiration into 20-

clause. :
