Indies and gentlemen, the mosquito is
here.
He arrived Monday, ami he’s come to
stay, more harm to him!
1 luring tho past week a convention
was held uu the dreary meml.iws which
stretch around the hanks of the Oconee.
It was not a convention «.f the solid
Nomocracy. Ncith* r we it «»u*» of Ite-
puIdicau ollice-seek* rs. in faei, there
was nothing’political about it; it was
simply a gathering of poor little mos
quitoes.
Millions were pr» s..nt. There was no
trouble t bout organization-no question
of candidates to disturb tin* meeting.
The multitud esitnply met and deteimiiieu
upon a midsummer campaign. As a part
of the arrangements it was decided that
a suitable number of trusty representa
tives should be left behind to keep up
tho reputation of the place in which the
convention was held, and that the re
mainder of the crowd should emigrate.
Athens, not being far away, was se
lected as the destination, and Monday as
the time of departure. ‘
The program w as carried out to the
letter, and on Monday evening the
bloodsucking horde crossed the Oconee
and settled down upon the peaceful 1 }*
dined inhabitants of our city. It was a
clear case of coining, seeing and t
quering, and the duee is to pay.
Who that has promenaded the streets
during the last twenty-four or thirty-six
hours has failed t.i note the sulphurous
odor of the atmosphere?
This was caused chiefly by the brim
stone exhalations of the Muttering people
of Athens. Forced into a state of frantic
desperation by the aggravating devilish-
ness of the buzzing marauders trotu the
river hanks, they have made the nir bine
with ther geometrically constructed
sentences of wrathful ami voluahle pro
fanity.
Mosquitoes! Y.s. confound 'em! They
are everywhere to he found throughout
the city.
It matters not what the condition or
surroundings. Wherever man is there
is the attendant musanc >—that blasted,
bloodthirsty, irrepressible, doggonetl, all
fired plague, the Georgia mosquito.
He is fa't humming iiiMiuity into the
ears of the people, M nd if he don’t draw-
oil his forces putty soon, why, there
will be trouble, that’s all.
We won’t stand it!

There is n strong under-current to,bsve

There i« little or r.o drniger «»f the de
feat of the democratic nominee for the
Legiriature from Flatke county.
'Temporary dilfeietices within the par
ty have been settled: the people have
chosen their candidate, and all true
democrats will give him a hearty sup
port. Many conservative colored voters
v jll also cast a ballot with the whites in
the coming election. <
It is not reasonable to suppose that
a negro could have any weight in a body
as white as the legi-1 »ture of Georgia.
So sending a negro, if such were possi
ble, would be of no real benefit to the
negroes. Arrears in taxes, however,
crush even the faintest hope of Pledger’s
election.
Tax Collector 11. II. Linton tells us
that there are fully liv«- hundred colored
voters in Clarke who have not paid ihuir
taxes, some as far back as for ifte past
seven years. He savs the live hundred
are due on an average five dollars per
capita. With no real benefit to be derived
in the event of his election, it is hardly
probable "that twenty five hundred
dollars can be raised among the repub
licans rf Clarke county, to pay up back
ta xes to allow the delinquents to cast a
ballot for W. A. Pledger.

Mr. Mell’s friends contend that they
have just as much right to bolt the sc-
lion of the primary election, as the
signers of the petition that forced Mr.
Melt into the race had to go hack upon
their promise to that gentleman. Hut
the situation ia different. When a voter
repudiated the pledge he had made Mr.
Melt when lie signed that paper, lie did
nut endanger the success of his party or
the political supremacy of his race. He
simply expressed his preference between
white men and democrats. On the pro
priety of this 1 have uu comment to make.
Hui since the declaratio . of the demo-
cracy of Clarke county as recorded at
the ballot hex, and the announced can
didacy of a negro and a republican, the
situation has been greatly changed. The
issue is not now between white men
and mem >ers of the same party, but be*
tween tbe Caucasian and the African,
and a Denmcial and republican. I do
not believe that there will be u dozen
white men in Clarke county who will re
fuse to give their support and vote in
such an issue.
Let us lay aside all differences; let us
forget every unkind and barsli word
spoken during tho heated contest; let us
throw the mantle of forgiveness around
evarv sentence calculated to chafe or ir
ritate us. In this slr.fe let us bury all
personal animosities, and look only t,
tbe success of our race and our party.

nervous, sensitive, egotistic man, when

work or general diversion, he moves
bus ly about telling everybody how hot
it is, with gestures and ejaculations to
iiiaich. He is • mental radix.or, bent
upon tranrmitting his own conditions to
-ther minds, and, without intending it,
is generating his own discomfort within
others.
On tho other band, the man of even

Bears have been so little hunted in
West Dougherty, of lute years, that they
have multiplied amazingly iu the Kiokee
and Chicasawhatchec swamps. Bruin is
a great trespasser, and helps himself
freely to the tender corn on Him swamps,
and whole acres are destroyed hy his de
predations. Farmers of this section oc
casionally still hunt for them with vary
ing success. Mr. Joseph Beall has been
annoyed by bears tearing down and eat
ing his corn in the fields that lie next to
the Kiokee swamps on his Beach Grove
plantation in West Dougherty. He de
termined to try to kill one them, and on
the night of July 3rd he took a couple of
negroes with him and went into the field
and occupied stands. He was not dis
appointed. In the first hours of the
night, a young b.-ar came into the field
and helped himself ‘.o a roasting ear.
About the time he was in the fail enjoy
ment of it, Mr. Beall fired on him from
his ambush, hitting him with eight buck
shot, and killing him almost instantly.
Bruin weighed 20P pounds. The tracks
of much larger ones are thick through
the field.

In the death of Miss. Bertie Paeon,
which occurred Wednesday, July, 4th.,
one of the brightest home circles in the
city was broken. Mi®s Bacon has two
sisters, who are teachers iu the public
schools, and they, together with some
of the other teachers, rented a home,
which Miss Bertie presided over and
kept bright for the tired teachers.
They spoke to me of her as the little
“home keeper.” They said she made it
“bright and happy” for them, and no
doubt she did. On the wall in their hall
are the words, “Content! Ah, Sweet
Content!” and the whole air of the place
gave evidence that it was a place where
content reigned.
Pul the “home keeper” is gone, and
the house desolate. She has gone to a
better home, where sorrow is unknown,
and on the walls of which the Father in
Heaven shines forever. Her young life,
which added sa much joy to her circle
of acquaintances, adds to that throng
which no man can number—in the
world beyond the skies.
