One of the in-St interesting studies bearing upon the subject of the rela- rion ol mind to matter is found in ob- ervin^ the etf-cu »f a high temp. ra. •ire upon diff-reut organizations. The nervous, sensitive, egotistic man, when the iheriiiomiotr ranges among the nine ties, it chiefly intent upon publishing his personal discomfort Instead of sit ting still and coc’mg his mind through work or general diversion, he moves bus ly about telling everybody how hot it is, with gestures and ejaculations to iiiaich. He is • mental radix.or, bent upon tranrmitting his own conditions to -ther minds, and, without intending it, is generating his own discomfort within others. On tho other band, the man of even temperament, or cool mind, avoids a|l mention of physics) and thermal rondi- •i ms on a hut day. HU purpoae is to g t Ins mind as far sway from them as k Miastble. Ha hears his nervom friend iluig down his pen or spade snd declare that it is too hot for work. To him con genial work is the Tory best mesas of ktepiag bit attention sway from physical discomfort. Bears have been so little hunted in West Dougherty, of lute years, that they have multiplied amazingly iu the Kiokee and Chicasawhatchec swamps. Bruin is a great trespasser, and helps himself freely to the tender corn on Him swamps, and whole acres are destroyed hy his de predations. Farmers of this section oc casionally still hunt for them with vary ing success. Mr. Joseph Beall has been annoyed by bears tearing down and eat ing his corn in the fields that lie next to the Kiokee swamps on his Beach Grove plantation in West Dougherty. He de termined to try to kill one them, and on the night of July 3rd he took a couple of negroes with him and went into the field and occupied stands. He was not dis appointed. In the first hours of the night, a young b.-ar came into the field and helped himself ‘.o a roasting ear. About the time he was in the fail enjoy ment of it, Mr. Beall fired on him from his ambush, hitting him with eight buck shot, and killing him almost instantly. Bruin weighed 20P pounds. The tracks of much larger ones are thick through the field. i on a mu: Ti nt:. Bertie Paeon, which occurred Wednesday, July, 4th., one of the brightest home circles in the city was broken. Mi®s Bacon has two sisters, who are teachers iu the public schools, and they, together with some of the other teachers, rented a home, which Miss Bertie presided over and kept bright for the tired teachers. They spoke to me of her as the little “home keeper.” They said she made it “bright and happy” for them, and no doubt she did. On the wall in their hall are the words, “Content! Ah, Sweet Content!” and the whole air of the place gave evidence that it was a place where content reigned. Pul the “home keeper” is gone, and the house desolate. She has gone to a better home, where sorrow is unknown, and on the walls of which the Father in Heaven shines forever.
