Daniel from yel low’ fever last night causes widespread grief, not only among the intimate asso ciates of tlie man, but from those who knew* him only in his official capacity as President of tho Board of Health. CoL Daniel was a humanitarian, unaffected and unostentatious, and the real good he accomplished perhaps only those to whom he ministered can propeily bear witness. Baker indicate that be is gaining slowly. A mystery surrounds the dispo sition of the money said to have been in the possession of Antonio Christopher at the time he was taken sick with the fe ver. He is reported to have had $8,000 in cash somew here about his premises. This seems improbable, however, for only a week or ho before his death he showed his deposit book to a newspaper man in this city, his credit at bank being theu about $1,000. It does not seem likely that he would keep that amount in bunk and a larger sum in cash about his premises. There are rumors that false friends secured the money and made off with it before he was taken sick. He is known to have been despondent for two weeks. For a long while lie kept a fruit and peanut stand and wax well known here. Dr. Afallett reports a queer case of yel- low-fover treatment and uccom|>anyir»g suffering and want. In driving out on the Middleburg road to see & patient he stopjied at the hut of a ’’cracker.” It had only one room. aUmt 12 by 18. and was occupied by eight |M*ople, including three children, the eldest of w hum was sick with yellow fever. She had received no treatment, the parents alleging that they could not get a physician. They ha«I heard of hot mustard-bath treat ment for reducing fever, and had fairly lioiled the laxly of the poor child fioin head to foot. To alleviate her acute suf ferings they had then besmeared her body with lard, and she lay there en during the tortures of this extreme treat ment, added to the pains of the fever. Medicines were administered at once and she is now believed to lx* much better. Fernandina still persists in shutting herself out from communication by tel egraph. To-day a locomotive arrived in BuBvin from that city and brought from R. C. Cooley the following message, which was wired from the latter point to Jacksonville! “No new cases of yellow fever to-day, and no deaths. Twenty-live cases now* under treatment. The situation presents no alarming features. Everybody ho|>e- ful. Nobody wants to l»?ava fernandina. All who wished to leave have gone. The only apprehension is of an outbreak from unemployed workmen. They are quiet up to the present time, however. We need aid. Jacksonville need have no fears of refugees from Fernandina at tempting to breakthrough Duval coun ty quarantine in order to secure free rations.” Air. Cooley is cashier of the bank of Fernandina, and formerly resided in this city, lie may lie relied upon as stating the situation as fairly as any man can do who is himself locked up in that tow n at present. . The question of fumigating through out the city will be taken up. Dr. Por ter, who has cliarge of this move, says that it is useless to try to do anything until the epidemic is declared off; then a house to houso insjxx-tion and fumiga tion will be made, and thoroughly, too. Dr. Porter says that it will take fully two months to accomplish this, and that it will cost $100,000 or more. It will be | done thoroughly, so as to avoid all dan- l ger of nn outbreak next year. This will | be one of the most important matters )w to be considered. Camp Mitchell is now ready, and has accommodations for 500 persons. Tlie orange shippers throughout tho state aro beginning to feel blue over shipping prosjiects. Doctors are all feeling much pleased at the decrease of the epidemic, and say that all their patients are doing wrell.
